On Feb. 12, 2-1-1 celebrated the new technology at their new facility. Supporters included Title Sponsor San Diego Gas & Electric followed by partner sponsor Bank of America, and celebration sponsors Carleton Management, Inc. inContact, Kaiser Permanente, Mission Federal Credit Union, Qualcomm and the San Diego Foundation. The $250,000 raised will help the community better connect with social services.  Board member Jon Grisson was recognized with the Henry Haimsohn Volunteer of the Year award in honor of his contributions to the organization.

Steve Brown and Fary Moini, Rotarians from the La Jolla Golden Triangle Club were named the San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary Club’s 2016 Peacemakers of the Year. “Steve and Fary demonstrate at the very highest level our Rotary value of ‘Service Above Self’”, said Sandra Schrift, Pathways to Peace Chair. “Our smartphones have become so commonplace that most of us don’t think about the power we hold in our pockets,” said Brown.  “These small machines have very sophisticated built-in imaging technology in the form of cameras. The colposcope wand fits into a smartphone.” Ultimately, Moini says, “it comes down to one simple concept:  “Rotary is making it possible for smartphones to save women’s lives. And that is the best PATHWAY TO PEACE.”

Women in Business/Women in Coffee is hosting  a coffee evening at the San Diego Central Library on Mar. 10. The evening begins with a tour of the library followed by a presentation by vendors, roasters, growers and industry professionals. Also included is a screening of “A Small Section of the World”. Proceeds will go to the Women in Coffee Mocrofinance Fund, which helps combat poverty, domestic violence and social instability on origin countries.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is teaming up with The Commons for the 8th annual Shave-A-Thon on Mar. 12. San Diegans will gather to shave their heads to generate awareness and fund research for childhood cancer and help give survivors a chance at long and healthy lives. All proceeds benefit The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, an organization who raises money for childhood cancer research.

The 38th Annual Gala, “Silver Screen” presented by the Women’s Auxiliary of Seacrest Village Retirement Communities was held on Feb. 27 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla. Esther Fischer and Linda Platt served as Gala Co-Chairs of the event  which raised $450,000.  The funds will be used for the provision of charitable care for those residents who have exhausted their financial resources and have no means for housing and healthcare.

Angel Kraemer and Fred Kleinbub have contributed $1 million in honor of the Kraemer-Kleinbub Family to fund St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center’s new Aquatic Center. SMSC offers small group or private adaptive swim lessons for adults and children with special needs and adaptive swim team training. Angel Kraemer Kleinbub will serve as Honorary Chairman for the Center’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.

Former Major League Baseball Commissioner and Olympic Committee Chairman Peter Ueberroth is being honored by Pro Kids/The First Tee of San Diego. A Celebration is scheduled for May 7 at the Hilton Torrey Pines Hotel in La Jolla. “Peter Ueberroth exemplifies the nine core values (honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy, and judgment) we promote in delivering character development and life skills to the young people we serve,” said Keith Padgett, Pro Kids’ CEO. He was recently awarded the 2016 NCAA Theodore Roosevelt Award

Barrio Logan College Institute was honored by KUSI and Torrey Pines Bank with the ‘Breaking Away Award of Excellence” for their 20 years of preparing disadvantaged youth ot be among the first in their families to attend college. The award was presented during a segment that aired on KUSI on February 27.

On Feb. 21 San Diego Habitat for Humanity dedicated 6 new homes in Imperial Beach. The homes were completed due to the efforts of Habitat volunteers and sponsors which included TD Ameritrade, Regency Centers BAE Systems, Cubic, California Bank & Trust, Wells Fargo and EDCO.
