The San Diego Chargers Ladies Club participated in Casa de Amparo’s 12th Annual Holiday Drive throughout the month of December. Other companies that participated in the drive included Callaway Golf, Park Hyatt Resort Aviara, Prana, Fluid Components International, Harrah’s Resort Southern California, Jenny Craig, Inc. and Lusardi Construction Co. The Holiday Drive fulfilled the wish lists of Casa Kids as well as household needs that will be used for Casa Kids served throughout the year.

Words Alive is celebrating its 4th Annual “Share Your Love of Reading” campaign Feb. 9-12. The campaign is designed to raise awareness about the importance of literacy and reading aloud to children. Elected officials, media personalities and other local individuals will as act as honorary readers in Words Alive classrooms throughout San Diego County. A matching grant sponsored by Author Bridge Media provides a dollar-for-dollar match of gifts up to $5,000 during the campaign. All proceeds will support Words Alive’s core programs that foster a love of reading in children, teens and adults in San Diego County.

The Dashing Jack Ornament in Jack in the Box restaurants ended Dec. 31 raising $220,000 on behalf of Big Brothers Big Sisters nationally with $17,133 going to San Diego programs. The 2014 promotion was the seventh year and has raised $1.9 million for BBBS nationally totally during that time. In January BBBS recognized volunteers who went beyond intentions to actions that benefit the children served, The High School Bigs of the Year were awarded a $500 scholarship sponsored by The Jack in the Box Foundation.

San Diego Hand Up Youth Food Pantry

San Diego Hand Up Youth Food Pantry

The Jewish Family Service of San Diego Hand Up Youth Food Pantry received a $75,000 grant from the S. Mark Taper Foundation. The one-year grant will support Hand Up in distributing supplemental food and providing essential supportive services to 8,000 people facing hunger in San Diego County. “The grant will allow The Hand Up Youth Food Pantry to focus on providing both healthy food and supportive services that individuals and families nned to build better lives,” said Michael Hopkins, CEO of JFS.

Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty is hosting a fundraiser for Next Step Service Dogs on Feb. 19 at its Encinitas office. The organization rescues dogs as well as trains dogs as companions for wounded warriors suffering with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. The evening includes artworks by San Francisco artist Kelly Cool Lucas which will be auctioned off to raise funds for the organization.

The San Diego County CA2 chapter of the Women Marines Association is hosting its 72nd anniversary celebration of women being allowed to serve in the United States Marine Corp on Feb 13at Denny’s on MCAS Miramar. The honored guest speaker is Sergeant Major Angela Maness who was the first female Sergeant Major of 8 & I barracks in Washington, DC. Maness was the first female to serve as Sergeant Major of Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina.
