On Mar. 8 the Clairemont Hilltoppers Little League’s Opening Day ceremony helped launch the third year of the Padres’ Youth Baseball Initiative. Members of the Padres staff were joined by the Swinging Friar and the Pad Squad to help officially kick off the 2014 Little League season. The Clairemont Hilltoppers team is one of 50 leagues in San Diego County benefitting from the Padres’ Youth Baseball Initiative. All of the team members wear authentic Padres jerseys and caps which represent different eras of Padres baseball.

Boys & Girls Clubs of East County is holding its 48th Annual Children’s Ball on Mar. 29 at the U.S. Grant Hotel. Ron & Mary Alice Brady are being honored for their commitment to build The Brady Family Club House & Teen Center and improving the lives of the children in La Mesa. The event is sponsored by Conrad Prebys and Debbie Turner, Sharp Grossmont Hospital and the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians.

Third annual Dinner with Friends

The third annual Dinner With Friends was held on Mar. 1 at the Ronald McDonald House to raise funds to benefit the House. Carlo Sanguinetti and Matt Teeter began putting this event together by inviting their friends to attend and give to a silent auction. 100% of the $47,000 raised goes to the House to provide a “home away from home” to families with children being treated with serious, often life-threatening conditions at local hospitals. Sponsors included a $5,000 donation from Alliance Environmental Group and its owners Jeff and Joe McLean. Other sponsors were Mesa Label Express, Popcakery, Lightning Brewery, Land Rover San Diego, Audi San Diego, Erik Turner Wines, Evgeny Yorobe Photography, Moto Restaurants and LeIsha.

The 4th annual Women in Blue luncheon was held on Mar. 5 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront presented by the San Diego Police Foundation. The newly appointed San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman was the keynote speaker. Those honored were Patricia Duke, San Diego County Sheriff’s Department; Daphne Hearn, FBI San Diego; and Jennifer Shen, San Diego Police Department. Verizon Wireless was the Presenting Sponsor for the event which raised $57,000 for the Police Foundation to provide funding for needed equipment, training and outreach programs that are not covered in the Police Department’s budget.

The American Academy of Pediatrics CA-Chapter 3 is holding its 5th Annual Read and Romp fundraiser on Mar. 22 at the McMillin Event Center at Liberty Station. The event encourages parents to read to their children and promote a love of reading. Proceeds benefit the pediatric literacy program Reach Out and Read San Diego, a program of the local AAP chapter.

San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program’s 25th Annual Women’s Resource Fair was held on Mar. 15 at Golden Hall downtown. Homeless women and children received free medical, legal and social services at the event. Each woman received a free breakfast, lunch, and a gift bag filled with donated toiletries and other items. Children also received free hearing and vision screenings, immunizations, and dental cleaning.

Voices for Children golf tournament

Voices for Children held its 22nd annual golf tournament on Feb. 24 at the Del Mar Country Club. The $140,000 raised is being used to provide more foster children in San Diego County with the caring advocacy of a Court Appointed Special Advocate, or CASA volunteer. Golfers Ed Capozzoli and Dan Sullivan, have been longtime supporters of VFC.

San Diego Center for Children is holding its 127th Annual Celebration on Apr. 8 at the Hilton San Diego  Bayfront downtown on Apr. 8. Time, Love & Tenderness is featuring multiple Grammy Award winner Michael Bolton. The Gold Sponsor is Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Indians.
