Padres Pedal the Cause announced today the awarding of $750,000 to fund 12 collaborative research grants to three National Cancer Institute-Designated Cancer Centers in San Diego – along with Rady Children’s Hospital – San Diego. The NCI-Designated Cancer Center recipients are Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute. Expenses were underwritten through the support of corporate sponsors including the Koman Family Foundation, BD, Sempra Energy, Wells Fargo, and Qualcomm.

Social Venture Partners is partnering with Dreams for Change to strengthen and expand the organization’s efforts to combat homelessness. Dreams for Change will receive a $20,000 grant and in-kind services worth $90,000 as part of Social Venture Partner’s two-year commitment to the organization. With the selection of Dreams for Change as its investee, Social Venture Partners continues its commitment to providing a multi-year funding stream, as well as pro-bono advice, to help organizations streamline and operate more efficiently.

Mike Gaines San Diego Charity Golf Tournament

The Sundt Foundation’s 13th annual Mike Gaines San Diego Charity Golf Tournament raised $37,500 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The tournament was held at the Riverwalk Golf Resort. The Sundt Foundation has sponsored the fundraising effort since 2001 in honor of Mike Gaines, who was a Sundt employee-owner before losing his life to complications from ALS. The proceeds are used for ALS research.

Feeding San Diego received a $52,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to help fight hunger in San Diego through Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program education and outreach. This grant will help Feeding San Diego increase access to SNAP among eligible households, reaching seniors, families with children, and other vulnerable populations.

Bill Littlejohn, Chief Development Officer of Sharp HealthCare Foundation, has been named the winner of the Harold J. Seymour Award by the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy. “Bill Littlejohn is a change agent and recognized leader in health care philanthropy,” says Steve Churchill, MNA, president and CEO of AHP. With three decades of experience, Littlejohn has led and directed philanthropic programs that have generated more than half a billion dollars. Under his leadership, Sharp has generated $275 million in philanthropy and recently completed INSPIRE: The Sharp HealthCare Campaign for Excellence.

Jenny Craig is the Honorary Chair of the 6th Annual Gold Shield Gala, “Rhapsody in Blue,” with Barbie and Dan Spinazzola as Chairs. The event is being held on September 9 at the US Grant Hotel and will benefit the San Diego Police Foundation. “We are so pleased Jenny Craig will be our Honorary Chair this year,” shared Police Foundation CEO Sara Napoli. “Her great passion for supporting our men and women in blue has inspired us all.”

The 71st Annual Jewel Ball, Taking Flight, is set for August 5 at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. “We are honored to continue the Las Patronas tradition of service to the San Diego community and are grateful for the thoughtful generosity and support of our underwriters, donors, advertisers, guests, and advisory members,” said Chair Jorie Fischer.

PSAR Realtor Games

The Pacific Southwest Association of Realtors raised $7,500 for Unity 4 Orphans, South Bay Community Services, and HomeAid San Diego. On June 23, PSAR sponsored the first-ever Realtor Games at Scobee Park, Chula Vista. The Realtor Games featured 12 teams of PSAR members competing in mental and physical challenges.
