Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational

On August 13, the 24th annual Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational was held near the Scripps Pier La Jolla. Kelly Slater, surfing world champion, was the honorary chair. Proceeds benefit Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health. Since its inception, the event has raised over $8 million for cancer research and care. The Rell Sunn Award was presented to John Mendelsohn, founding director of Moores Cancer Center.

The Living Coast Discovery Center raised $84,000 at its eighth annual Farm to Bay event on August 5. The funds raised support coastal wildlife conservation, education, and sustainability programs at the Living Coast throughout the year. San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox was honored at the event in celebration of its 30th anniversary. Supervisor Cox was recognized for his vision, guidance, and support. Sponsors included Marine Group Boat Works as the presenting sponsor. Mission Federal Credit Union, BAE Systems, Baldwin & Sons, Cox Communications, and Wells Fargo were among other sponsors.

Volunteers of America Southwest is holding its 18th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic on September 18 at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo. Title sponsors are Sysco and MediExcel. Other sponsors include RezCare Pharmacy, California Bank & Trust, Accretive, and Philip Curtis Realty. Proceeds will benefit San Diego’s homeless and disabled veterans, adults with addiction and mental health challenges, struggling seniors, and young children with unique needs.

The 49th annual Scripps Clinic Invitational Golf Tournament is being held September 14–15 at the Torrey Pines South Golf Course. The dinner event on September 15 is being held at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. Proceeds will benefit the primary care expansion at Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines.

Nine Girls Ask? is holding its 9th annual Angels of Hope Sunday Brunch event on September 17 at the US Grant Hotel. All proceeds go to research to cure ovarian cancer. Yvonne Musgrove and Ed Baum will be honored as the “Couple of Inspiration.” The organization will be celebrating the kick off of the trial Rockif Clinical Trial, Phase I & II.

The San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program is holding its annual Justice for All Celebration on September 14 at the San Diego Natural History Museum. Event sponsors include Cohelan Khoury & Singer, DLA Piper, Fish & Richardson, The Morrison & Foerster Foundation, and Procopio. Proceeds support SDVLP’s mission to provide access to justice to vulnerable, disadvantaged San Diegans. This year’s award recipients are Kevin D. Bush, Esq. of Cozen O’Connor; Dilkhwaz Ahmed, Executive Director of License to Freedom; and Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton, Outstanding Law Firm.

The San Diego Air & Space Museum held its 34th Annual Charity Golf Tournament on August 9 at the Coronado Municipal Golf Course presented by San Diego International Airport and Corkys WE Control Pests. The tournament raised $50,000 to assist the youth education programs including AeroSummer Camps.

Knockaround partners with ArtReach

Knockaround has partnered with ArtReach for the fourth year. The collaboration called Class Acts brings a hands-on design exercise to fourth and fifth graders in San Diego County elementary schools. Sales of Peacock Life sunglasses amounted to $25,000, which supports the ArtReach free Access to Art Program that brings art education programs into K-6 schools, focusing on schools that have no resources for visual arts education.
