Kelli O’Hara performed her Broadway songs along with selections from the Great American Songbook at The Salk Institute’s 21 year of Symphony at Salk on Aug. 20. O’Hara won a Tony Award in 2015 for her performance in The King and I. Salk raised $1,146,000 to support research and education outreach programs. The late Conrad Prebys and Debra Turner were the Presenting Sponsors. Other sponsors included Audrey Geisel, The Dr. Seuss Fund at the San Diego Foundation, Joan and Irwin Jacobs, Frederik Paulsen/Ferring Pharmaceuticals and Michele and Ted Waitt.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito named Yvette Conde, a member of the La Colonia Club in Eden Gardens as the 2016 Youth of the Year. She will receive a $1,000 education scholarship and goes on to represent the San Dieguito clubs in the countywide BGC of America Youth of the Year competition. The event raised $160,000 to support the programs of BGC. Sharp Mary Birch Hospital held it’s Women’s Luncheon on May 25 at the Del Mar Country Club. The $107,000 raised benefits the Neonatal Research Institute. StemCyte was the Premier Sponsor and others included AMN HealthCare, Sodexo, Sharp Rees-Stealy, Morgan Stanley and City National Bank. A second event was held at the home of DeAnn Cary, Director of Outcomes Research at Sharp, the Neonatal Research Institute hosted its annual Summer BBQ with patients and families who have partnered with Sharp Mary Birch to provide a NICU parent’s perspective during the development state of therapies.
The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank will host the sixth annual AimLoan.com San Diego Blues Festival. The 23rd Annual Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitation was held on Aug. 21 at the beach near Scripps Pier in La Jolla. THE $500,000 raised will benefit research and patient care at Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health. T. Denny Sanford was presented the Rell Sun Award , an award given annually in memory of Hawaiian surfer and Luau supporter Rell Kapolioka’ehukai Sunn, who lost her battle with breast cancer. Celgene was the Title Sponsor of the event.
San Diego Padres star and Boys & Girls Clubs Alum Jon Jay hosted a bowling event benefiting the BGC of Greater San Diego on Aug. 21 at the East Village Tavern+Bowl. Jay’s interest was to connect with the kids. He has hosted a group of Club kids for batting practice and a game. He and his wife Nikki have become part of the BGCGSD family and have given their time, treasure and talent.

The San Diego Police Foundation is presenting the 5th Annual Gold Shield Gala on Sept. 10 at the US Grant Hotel. Shelley Zimmerman, Chief of Police is the Guest of Honor. Proceeds will be used to fund police dogs who are invaluable criemfighters and help keep officers safe.
