Scripps Research Institute Receives Major Gift

The Scripps Research Institute has received a $5.65 million gift from Helen Dorris, founder of TSRI’s Dorris Neuroscience Center. “Thanks to Helen Dorris’s generosity, we have made progress finding new approaches to diseases from hearing loss and pain to hydrocephalus, schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s,” said Ulrich Mueller, director of the Dorris Neuroscience Center. The Dorris Neuroscience Center also sponsors three Helen Dorris Scholars, an annual student award, a number of summer student internships and a distinguished lecture series.

The Maritime Museum of San Diego has received a $500,000 donation from the Hervey Family Fund at the San Diego Foundation. The funds will go towards the financing and ongoing fundraising of the San Salvador project. “This full-scale, seaworthy replica of Cabrillo’s galleon will serve both to educate and fuel the imaginations of children in our region,” said President and CEO Raymond Ashley.

The 27th Business Hall of Fame presented by Jack in the Box Foundation was held on Sept. 14 at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. Four members of the business community were inducted into Junior Achievement’s Business Hall of Fame Lifetime Laureates. The laureates include: Rolf Benirschke, Tom Hom, Joanne Pastula and T. Denny Sanford. The event also recognized U.S. Navy’s Center for Information Dominance and the Center for Service Combat Systems. The JA Golf Classic followed on Sept. 16 at the Grand Golf Club and was sponsored by San Diego Fluid Systems Technologies. “Proceeds from both events support program curriculum that fosters work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills,” said Marla Black, newly appointed President and CEO, JA of San Diego County.

The San Diego Symphony Season Opening Gala OPUS 2015 featuring Jahja Ling Music Director and Yuja Wang, Pianist, is being held on October 10. Nine Girls Ask?

The 7th Annual Nine Girls Ask? Ovarian Cancer Luncheon Raised $125,000 at its Take My Hand Luncheon on Sept. 12 at the US Grant Hotel. The day featured a program with Kelly Corrigan, a New York Times best-selling author, and Liz Laats, an ovarian cancer survivor. Funds raised will support local ovarian cancer researchers. NGA was created in 2009 by Joan Wyllie after her own experiences with Stage IV ovarian cancer. NGA volunteers provide one-on-one patient outreach, to raise awareness and to raise funds dedicated to finding a cure and a test for early detection.

ROMP, “A Moment In Buenos Aires” benefiting the Ronald McDonald House Charities San Diego, is being held on Oct. 3 at the Estancia Hotel. A 2016 Porsche Cayman has been donated by Hoehn Carlsbad and will be raffled off at the event. Other sponsors include Hughes Marino, Sycuan, SDG&E, Wells Fargo and Landmark Aviation as well as McDonalds.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Union Bank and KPBS are honoring two outstanding Latinos as local heroes. Karemi Alvarez, MPH, senior manager at the University of California, San Diego Center for Community Health and Enrique Morones, founder and president of Border Angels will be recognized a private dinner celebration with their families and executives from KPBS and Union Bank.

The San Diego Public Library Foundation is hosting its 2nd Annual Celebration Under the Dome event to recognize the two-year anniversary of the San Diego Central Library. The event is being held on Oct. 3 at the Central Library at Joan and Irwin Jacobs Common. Karl Denson, a member of The Rolling Stones Touring band, along with his current band The Tiny Universe; “Beatles vs. Stones – A Musical Shootout”, are scheduled to perform. Proceeds from the event will support programming across all 36 San Diego Public Library locations.
