The USS Midway Museum held its 9th annual Midway American American Patriot Award Gala, honoring the Greatest Generation on its 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. A total of $600,000 was raised to support Midway’s “No Child Left Ashore” scholarship program. The program ensures that all 2nd – 8th grade students have the opportunity to come to Midway . Philanthropist Virginia Napierskie was the Presenting Sponsor. Other sponsors included The Fish Market, Jack in the Box Foundation, Linear Technology and Pacific Western Bank.

The San Diego Rotary Club presented the 2015 Mrs. San Diego award to Betty Peabody at its luncheon program on Sept. 24 at the Liberty Station Conference Center.  For many years Peabody has volunteered for a wide range of organizations including Balboa Park, Caridad Internacionale, Crime Stoppers and Scripps Mercy Hospital.  She is the founder of the Balboa Park Millennium Society, which is now called the Friends of Balboa Park. For 40 years, the San Diego Rotary Club has been selecting an individual each year that has contributed outstanding community betterment to the region.

The Escondido Charitable Foundation is awarding $167,860 to eight nonprofit organizations that promote the rich natural resources and open spaces of Escondido. The grants were announced at the ECF 9th Annual Grant Celebration on Sept. 24 at Classical Academy High School in Escondido. Programs funded include $30,000 to Escondido Outdoors with Outdoor Outreach; $10,000 to Exploring and Conserving the Escondido Creek Watershed with San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy; and $30,000 to Save Our Aquatic Resources Program with Zoological Society.

On Sept. 26 dd’s Discounts celebrated the grand opening of its first store in National City. In support of the community, dd’s donated $2,500 to the Bob Payne Family Branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego. Additionally, $1,000 in dd’s DISCOUNTS cards were given away.

SAY San Diego Back to school drive

SAY San Diego Back to school drive

The SAY San Diego Back to School Drive generated the purchase of 1,000 backpacks for distribution this fall. Mission Fed has helped the program meet its mission of serving a record number of area students. “Mission Fed and the community partners engaged by your organization have enabled us to provide the highest number achieved for the SAY program in our 45 year history,” said Nancy Gannon Hornberger, CEO of SAY San Diego.

“Moonlight in Casablanca” benefitting Miracle Babies is being held on Oct. 10 at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar Hotel. Sponsors include Sydney D. Holland Foundation, La Jolla IVF, Tri City Medical Center, Sony Pictures, San Diego Neonatology, AMN Healthcare and Sharp Mary Birch Hospital. Funds raised will support the mission of Miracle Babies which provides support and financial assistance to families with critically ill newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

AHA San Diego Heart and Stroke walk

The American Heart Association 2015 San Diego Heart and Stroke Walk was held on Sept. 19 with more than 10,000 people participating. UC San Diego Health conducted 90 free health screenings and $1.1 million was raised. Union Bank was the local sponsor. Union Bank Managing Director Anthony Perez said “I am proud of Team Union Bank for their ongoing commitment to heart health awareness and raising funds for the 2015 San Diego Heart Walk.”

interfaith community Services

AT&T presented $120,000 to Interfaith Community Services to support their Transitional Youth Program.  The program supports resilient youth who are at-risk of dropping out of high school by providing intensive one-on-one academic mentoring and leadership development. The $120,000 contribution is an installment of a $300,000 contribution pledged last November. The donation was a part of AT&T Aspire, its signature education initiative focused on school success and career readiness.

The AT&T Pioneers De Anza Chapter raised $1,000 for Feeding America San Diego to help provide 4,000 meals to San Diegans.
