The 2015 Innovation Night was held on June 9 at the La Jolla Playhouse featuring the first Innovation Gallery with ResMed’s S+ product, an exhibit on cognitive technologies, 3d scanning and machine learning robotics from Qualcomm. The Playhouse gave special appreciation to Honorary Chair J. Craig Venter and his companies: JCVI, HLI and SGI. Gurtin Fixed Income was presenting sponsor. Other sponsors included Qualcomm, BioMed Realty, Cooley, Forward Ventures/Carson Royston Group, Cox Business and The Lodge at Torrey Pines. The event supports the Playhouse’s new play development and Education and Outreach programs.

Sharp HealthCare was the Presenting Sponsor of YWCA of San Diego County’s 2015 In the Company of Women. The event included the Tribute to Women & Industry Awards. Awards of distinction were presented to Ann Durham, Kristin Escamilla and Trisha Khaleghi for their managerial, executive or leadership role for their outstanding achievements.

The San Diego Ballet’s Silver Anniversary Gala celebrating 25 years was held on May 9 at the Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter. The event raised $30,000 to support the ballet’s innovative performances, educational programming and community outreach.

San Diego Habitat for Humanity has partnered with Balfour Beatty Construction, Clark Construction, McCarthy Builders, and RQ Construction, to build four homes from June 22-26. The Home Builders Blitz represents a partnership between HfH and the building industry to build homes across the nation. Financial support has been provided by The Jimmie Johnson Foundation, Lowe’s, The City of El Cajon, and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

EY Entrepreneur Of The Year 2015 Awards in San Diego and Imperial Counties were announced at a gala event on June 18 at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar resort. The awards program recognizes business leaders and entrepreneurs who demonstrate excellence and extraordinary success in areas such as innovation, financial performance and commitment to their businesses and communities. The EY San Diego region award recipients are: Dr. Rich Heyman, Biotech/Technology; Jeff Church, Suka Juice, Consumer Products; Jeffery Sears and James Stuart, Lifestyle; and Mary Ann McGarry, Financial Services. Business Re-imagined went to Robert Hayes, Herbert Mutter and Peter Botz, Triton Management Services & Two Jinn.

In celebration of LGBT Pride Month, Union Bank has partnered with KPBS to honor two individuals as local heroes. Terry Cunningham is the chair of the HI Health Services Planning Council for the County of San Diego and Christine Kehoe, is a LGBT community leader. They are being recognized at a private dinner celebration with their families and executives from KPBS and Union Bank.

The Petco Foundation celebrated its 7th annual Hope Gala on June 20 at Petco Park. The “Celebration of Love” honored Katherine and Nancy Heigl, Jason Heigl Foundation and Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter. They were recognized for their efforts to save animals and ensure they live their best life. Guests also enjoyed a Rescue and Runway Fashion Show showcasing animals available for adoption from the San Diego Humane Society. The Petco Foundation presented a $100,000 grant to the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation to help to continue its lifesaving work. The Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter received a $75,000 grant.

On June 20, the City of El Cajon and 200 volunteers built a playground at Wells Park in a day. The existing playground at Bill Beck Park was in need of replacement and a new playground will provide youth with an area for play. Volunteers were off duty Heartland & Rescue firefighters, El Cajon Police Officers, City personnel and members of local civic groups. KaBOOM, Foresters, Stoney’s Kids, Kiwanis Club of El Cajon Valley and The City of El Cajon designed the playground.
