The YWCA of San Diego County has received a $5 million gift from Vi and Dan McKinney. To honor their unwavering commitment and dedication to the women and families impacted by domestic violence, the Becky’s House Emergency Shelter will be renamed The Vi McKinney Becky’s House Shelter. As one of the largest philanthropic contributions since the YWCA’s founding in 1908, the McKinney’s gift marks a significant milestone in the organization’s history. Through a designated Future Fund, this contribution will allow the YWCA to accelerate plans to achieve financial stability and enhance its long-term impact for women, children, and families facing domestic violence and homelessness. “Vi and Dan McKinney’s remarkable gift is providing the foundation for our future and will enable the YWCA of San Diego County to serve the community for generations to come,” said Heather Finlay, CEO of the YWCA of San Diego County.

The San Diego Botanic Garden has received a $1 million pledge towards the creation of the Garden’s education and events facility, recently named the Dickinson Family Education Pavilion. “This tremendous grant awarded to us by our close friends and neighbors, the Leichtag Foundation, has helped the San Diego Botanic Garden to take a significant step towards making the Dickinson Family Education Pavilion a reality,” said Julian Duval, president and CEO of the San Diego Botanic Garden. The Donald C. & Elizabeth M. Dickinson Foundation has  extended the deadline for their $1 million challenge grant, which was pledged in December 2013. The Garden now has until December 31, 2015 to raise the remaining $1.3 million of the $3 million in additional funding needed to meet the challenge goal. Upon successful completion of the Come Grow with Us! campaign, the Dickinson Family Education Pavilion will be located adjacent to the nationally-acclaimed Hamilton Children’s Garden. The Pavilion will provide an enclosed space for expanded educational offerings, as well as a meeting and event space for up to 400 visitors.

CO2 Group Director Ralph Keeling said the grant will make it possible for his team to restore atmospheric measurements that had been discontinued because of a lack of funding, address a three-year backlog of samples that have been collected but not analyzed, and enhance outreach efforts that educate the public about the role carbon dioxide plays in climate.
