National University honored philanthropists Malin Burnham and Denny Sanford with honorary doctorate degrees during Commencement activities on June 11. The achievements of the two, who have dedicated their vision, vast resources and time to nonprofit causes in San Diego and beyond, reflect the university’s own mission to serve the public good. “These honorary degrees recognize their achievements and contributions as philanthropists and entrepreneurial leaders ,” said Dr. Michael Cunningham. “Their passionate involvement in nonprofit organizations and causes ranging from health to education demonstrate the infinite possibilities for each of us and our graduates to effect positive change in our communities.”

The Association of Fundraising Professionals announced the lead sponsors for National Philanthropy Day which is set for October 28 at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel. Sharp HealthCare is the Presenting Sponsor and SDG&E is the Community Engagement Sponsor. Others include University of California San Diego, Rady Children’s Hospital, Manpower, Southwest Airlines, Mission Federal Credit Union, AT&T and San Diego State University.  “We are incorporating the theme of the “gifts of time, treasure and talent” into National Philanthropy Day,” according to Bill Littlejohn, this year’s chair.

Barrio Logan College Institute’s “Opportunity for Impact” raised $472,996. The event was held on June 3 at the San Diego City Library. Frank Urtasun was the Honorary Chair and Linda Katz was the chair. All proceeds will support current members of the program and enable new students to fulfill their aspirations for a higher education. “The after-school academic enrichment program promotes a family-focused, college bound mindset. All of the 2014 program graduates have been accepted to college, all of whom are the first generation in their families to attend college,” said Jose Cruz, Executive Director of BLCI.

San Diego Symphony will present Tux ‘N Tennies Summer Bash on the Bay 2014 on June 27 at Embarcadero Marina Park South. The Theme is Viva Las Vegas and will feature The Music of Elvis. Ellen and Tim Zinn and Barbie and Dan Spinazzola are co-chairs. Sycuan Casino is the Presenting Sponsor.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego hosted the Celebrity Golf Classic on June 5 at Barona Creek Golf Club. Nineteen celebrities from the Padres, Chargers, NBA, USD Toreros, US Soccer, WPSL Sea Lions joined host Yonder Alonso to raise $20,000 to benefit the BGCGSD Ramona Branch. “We are very pleased and honored to have Yonder Alonso be engaged with our Clubs,” said BGCGSD President/CEO Danny Sherlock. “Having a Boys & Girls Club alumnus helping to make an impact of the lives of kids today is very special. We thank Yonder, his team and the Padres for their continued support in helping us change lives. “

University of San Diego California Triton 5K

University of San Diego California Triton 5K

University of California San Diego Chancellor Pradeep Khosla and UCSD faculty and staff participated in the Triton 5K Race for the Future on June 7. The 3.1-mile race was held along the scenic course through campus. The $270,000 raised support scholarships for all who need them is a key priority at UC San Diego. “By participating in the Triton 5K, you are having an extremely big impact on UC San Diego and our students,” said Chancellor Khosla. “Every penny we raise today will support undergraduate scholarships and our vision of being a student-centered university.”

ElderHelp of San Diego held a 5K Fun Run/One Mile Family Walk on June 7 at Road Runner Sports. Road Runner Sports CARES was the underwriter for the event which raised $15,000 for ElderHelp’s programs. Co-sponsors included Gensler Architects, San Diego Firefighters Local 145, One World 2014, Sayre Consulting and GlenBrook Health Center.

Oceanside Charitable Foundation held its 6th Annual Grant Awards Celebration on June 16 providing seven nonprofits with $58,000 in funding. The grants will enhance civic leadership, engagement, and volunteerism within the Oceanside community. Oceanside REACH program at Vista Community Clinic received $18,000; School of Nursing Healthcare Project program with CCSUSM Foundation and TIP Training Academy and Resource Guide program each received $10,000; and four others received $5,000.
