The Association of Fundraising Professionals, San Diego Chapter has announced the honorees to be recognized at National Philanthropy Day on Oct. 28 presented by Sharp HealthCare. The luncheon is being held at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel. National Philanthropy Day is in its 42nd year and is organized by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, San Diego Chapter.  Ernest and Evelyn Rady are recognized as Outstanding Philanthropists for their transformational philanthropy and dedication to the community. Their contributions to the community are not only financial but also their time and commitment to the organizations they support. Others being recognized are Lori Walton, Cymer,  Barney & Barney Foundation,  Dr. Elizabeth Jones, Kristen Bertell, and Sam the Cooking Guy as Celebrity Philanthropists. Outstanding Youth Volunteers are Daisy Aguilar and Rosa Olascoaga.

Phil’s BBQ – Big Brothers Big Sisters

Phil’s BBQ – Big Brothers Big Sisters

Phil’s BBQ and Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County held the sixth annual Phil’s Big BBQ at Petco Park on Aug. 11. The $72,000 net proceeds went to BBBS Operation Bigs Program, celebrating its 10th year in service. Title sponsors included the San Diego Padres, Alliance Group Real Estate Services, Torrey Pines Bank, and Bumble Bee Seafoods. Event sponsors included Ballast Point, Karl Strauss, Pixster, Dlush, Kid Ventures and Sunbelt Rentals. Operation Bigs was launched in 2004 to meet the increasing demand for Big Brothers and Big Sisters from Camp Pendleton families.

The USS Midway Museum’s Midway American Patriot Award Gala held on Aug. 28 honored seven living veterans of the Battle of Midway. The gala raised over $500,000 to support the museum’s DJO Global “No Child Left Ashore” scholarship program. Virginia Napierskie, Booz Allen Hamilton, Jack in the Box Foundation, Linear Technology, Pacific Western Bank and SDG&E were sponsors. “These men represent the greatest generation and it is truly a privilege for Midway to help build a bridge to future generations in their honor,” said Daniel Beintema, President of the Midway Foundation.

The LOVELIKEBEER Menu Series has announced the next installment. The third and latest collaboration of this series is with a new North Park restaurant, Tacos Perla. The July’s addition to the Monkey Paw menu continues to generate donations to Ferdinand’s Familia All Species Animal Rescue with every purchase of the Mumbai Monkey Sandwich paired with the Monkey Paw LOVELIKEBEER Lemon Balm and Mint Saison. As part of San Diego’s LWP Group, the taco shop also has an existing association with a charitable organization through LWP’s “Community Gives” project.  Tacos Perla has paired Mike Hess Brewing’s Vienna Cream Ale with tacos.

The East County EDC Foundation donated $50,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of East County Foundation for computer equipment and career development training at the new Brady Family Clubhouse to be built on the La Mesa Middle School campus. The check was presented by ECEDC member Bob Taylor, founder of Taylor Guitars on behalf of the Matt Magagna Fund, named in honor of a high school student who passed away in 2000. His mother, Diane Magagna is director of international sales at Taylor Guitars.

STAR/PAL Surf Clinic was held on Aug. 22 at Silver Strand State Beach. Full-time law enforcement officers coordinate unique programs and recruit additional law enforcement and community volunteers to work directly with underserved youth. With the help of volunteers from local law enforcement agencies, STAR/PAL is able to provide 10,000 youth services annually throughout the county of San Diego. STAR/PAL offers free educational, athletic, and recreational programs which focus on promoting youth safety, positive life choices, civic engagement, and academic success.
