The 11th annual Father of the Year dinner was held on June 12 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla Aventine Hotel. CEO and publisher of San Diego Magazine Jim Fitzpatrick was the emcee for the evening which honored four fathers by the American Diabetes Association’s San Diego office. Those receiving the Father of the Year award were Allan Shaw, retired president/CEO of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s San Diego-based Pacific South Coast Chapter; Rick Reeder, executive managing director, Cassidy Turley San Diego Capital Markets Group; Jim Stone, managing associate, Mass Mutual Greater San Diego; and Thomas Wornham, chairman, San Diego County Water Authority. A total of $200,000 was raised for diabetes research and programs and services for people with diabetes.

In celebration of LGBT Pride Month, Union Bank has partnered with KPBS to honor two individuals as local heroes. Rev. Canon Albert Olge, president of the St. Paul’s Foundation for International Reconciliation and Robert Gleason, chief executive officer and president of Evans Hotels were recognized at a private dinner celebration with their families and executives from KPBS and Union Bank.

KPBS and Union Bank collaborate on the Local Heroes program which pays tribute to exemplary leaders who are making a difference and enriching the lives of others by improving their community, region and the world at large.  The 2014 LGBT Pride Month honorees demonstrate a shared commitment to providing their communities with the tools to thrive in today’s changing world.

The Fairy Festival at the Hamilton Children’s Garden at San Diego Botanic Gardens was held on June 21.

The Festival was presented by Great Smiles Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics and featured fairy and garden themed crafting. The Hamilton Children’s Garden is the largest interactive children’s garden on the West Coast and provides a full acre of interactive exhibits offering children and their families the opportunity to experience the magic of the outdoors firsthand.

San Diego County Credit Union was the sponsor for the Home of Guiding Hands Gala held on June 6 at the Hotel del Coronado. This was the 40th anniversary of the HGH Gala and to help celebrate the occasion, the organization honored longtime partners, including SDCCU, for their years of service, dedication and contributions to HGH. The event raised $150,000 for infants, adolescents and adults in San Diego with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The San Diego Police Foundation hosted its 14th annual Friends of the Badge Luncheon on June 11 at Valley View Casino Center. Qualcomm was the Champion Sponsor for the luncheon which raised $125,000 to support the Police Foundation’s mission to fund equipment, technology and training for police officers. Other sponsors included SDG&E, Motorola Solutions, Cox, Valley View Casino Center, Datron and San Diego Chargers.

The Chula Vista Charitable Foundation granted $45,000 to three non-profits at a pre-game ceremony as part of Chula Vista Community Day at Petco Park. This year CVCF chose to focus funding on building community leadership and involvement around a Health and Human Service issue in Chula Vista. Those receiving grants were Turning the Hearts Center for the Have a Heart, Meeting Critical Needs program, $15,000; St. Rose of Lima for the Sister Dolores Outreach, Fresh Food to Families program, $12,000, WeSupportU for the Time For My Health/Tiempo Por Mi Salud program, $8,000 plus another $10,000 from a CVCF founding member for the program.

Downtown San Diego Partnership held its 21st Annual Golf Tournament on June 21 at the Coronado Municipal Golf Course. Dynalectric San Diego was the Title Sponsor and OliverMcMillan was the Presenting Sponsor. All of the funds raised will support the Downtown San Diego Partnership which is a non-profit entity.

UCSD Cancer Center’s Survivor’s Beach

UCSD Cancer Center’s Survivor’s Beach

The University of California San Diego Moores Cancer Center hosted its 8th annual Survivor Beach on June 15 at the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa in Mission Bay. Celgene was the lead sponsor for the event which honored those who have fought cancer, as well as their families, friends and caregivers. Funds raised will help further the Moores Cancer Center mission of translating promising scientific discoveries into new options for the care of cancer patients.
