San Diego-based National Conflict Resolution Center does amazing work in our communities. NCRC helps students and neighbors solve disputes using respectful communication and empathy (they also work with employees in large corporations). One of their programs is the Avoiding the Pipeline to Prison initiative—it brings together law enforcement agencies and schools to use restorative justice practices (e.g. victim and offender sit down together for a dialogue, etc.) with the goal of keeping kids in school and out of detention facilities. (This also saves taxpayer dollars that would otherwise be spent on prosecution and incarceration.) We interviewed President Steven Dinkin in our feature, 17 Big Ideas for 2017.

Dinkin spoke during the 30th Annual Peacemaker Awards Dinner at the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina on April 7. The event raised $724,000, which beat the record for highest amount raised at any single event in NCRC’s 35-year history. The grand total was also 34 percent higher than what was raised at the 2016 event!

Signature Flight Support, a local general aviation operator at SAN, donated $10,000 to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego. The funds will go toward upgrading the room that Signature sponsors at the House. Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego provides a “home away from home” for families with children being treated in San Diego hospitals.

Feeding San Diego hosted Pairings with a Purpose at Bobby Riggs Tennis Club and Museum in Encinitas. The event raised enough to provide more than 500,000 meals to relieve childhood hunger. Using relationships with local farmers and retailers, the Feeding America affiliate has provided 25.2 million meals within the last year.
