Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute

Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute held its “Bring It!” event on April 27 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Guests competed in trivia, interactive games, and heard from a faculty researcher focused on tackling the hardest to treat breast cancer. NuVasive, Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Cooley and Heron Therapeutics were some of the sponsors. Funds raised will support groundbreaking biological research and discoveries with the greatest potential to profoundly impact human health.

Voices for Children’s Wine Women & Shoes event is being held on May 20. The event will be held at the historic Canfield-Wright Estate. Proceeds will benefit Voices for Children (VFC) and its Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program. Sponsors include California Bank & Trust, First American Title, and L+L Printers.

Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank gala

The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank held its fifth annual gala, Cheers To 40 Years – A Ruby Celebration, on April 28 at its warehouse in Miramar. The event celebrated the Food Bank’s 40th anniversary and raised more than $450,000 for the nonprofit’s countywide hunger-relief programs including the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program that provides weekend backpacks of food to elementary school children living in poverty. The Ruby Presenting Sponsor was R & R Construction and Sapphire Sponsors were the Albertsons Vons Foundation, Baker Electric Solar, Chevron and The San Diego Foundation. The gala featured 25 of the county’s best chefs.

SEAL Family Foundation

The SEAL Family Foundation event was held on April 29 at the Del Mar Country Club. Madeleine Pickens and Dominique Plewes were Co-Chairs of the event which raised $1.4 million. Sponsors included American Airlines, Simpson Motors, Kern & Co., Bumble Bee Tuna, Wells Fargo, NetJets, Doug Allred Company, Pamplemousse Grille, and Innovative Capital. The event recognized the Naval Special Warfare community and their families for their military service, and honored their fallen heroes.

The Poway unit of The Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary is hosting Tabletops & Tea on May 21 at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. Proceeds will benefit the behavioral health initiative.

On May 2 Sycuan Casino presented a $25,000 donation to Mama’s Kitchen to support the 26th Annual Mama’s Day event that helps to raise funds for Mama’s Kitchen’s mission to deliver hot, nutritious meals to men, women and children affected by AIDS or cancer. Alberto Cortés, executive director, Mama’s Kitchen said “Sycuan’s contributions are vital to helping us provide nourishing meals for our neighbors struggling with AIDS or cancer.”

The San Diego Council on Literacy’s eighth annual “Eat.Drink.Read. A Culinary Event for Literacy,” is being held on May 18 at the San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park. The event raises funds to support the organization’s 29 affiliated programs that provide free literacy assistance to children, families and adults throughout San Diego County.


Gap Intelligence hosted its fifth annual Drives for Rides golf tournament on May 5 at the Encinitas Ranch Golf Course. The event raised $57,650, which will provide 1,153 rides for ENF’s Ride With Emilio program. ENF is a non-profit that helps families navigate their child’s journey through cancer. The program ensures that no child misses life-saving cancer treatment due to lack of transportation.
