On Mar. 1, the 2017 Women in Blue luncheon was held to celebrate and honor female law enforcement leaders. Those honored were Sandra Albrektsen/Aida Vasquiez; Roxanne Cahill. San Diego Chief of Police Shelley Zimmerman delivered the keynote address. ESET was the presenting sponsor. The $77,000 raised will go to San Diego Police Foundation to fund vital equipment and training needs of the SDPD as well as related community outreach and crime-prevention programs.

Just in Time for Foster Youth honored Louarn and Alan Sorkin at its Walk the Talk annual fundraising celebration on Mar. 11 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. Louarn was one of the co-founders of JIT which supports young people leaving foster care. US Bank was the Presenting Sponsor. Other sponsors included Otis Eastern Service, Ralph Tulack Estate, Capital Growth, Citizens Business Bank and San Diego Foundation. The event raised $550,000 for JIT’s programs and services benefiting transitioning foster youth.

Just in Time for Foster Youth

The 5th annual Tour of Sufferlandria raised $144,808 for the Davis Phinney Foundation and its programs to help those affected by Parkinson’s Disease. “The Greatest Grand Tour of a Mythical Nation in the World” took place Feb. 4-12. The proceeds go to provide support for outreach, educational programs and research.

The cousin of Martha Longenecker Roth, the late founder of Mingei International Museum, established the Martha Longenecker Roth Distinguished Artist-Residence Endowment at UC San Diego with a $1 million grant. The program will bring exceptionally talented, artists to the Department of Visual Arts to practice, present and instruct students during a critical stage of their artistic development.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Miracle Circle Auxiliary celebrated its 3rd anniversary at Breakfast at Tiffany’s on Feb. 22 at La Valencia Hotel. The event raised $74,500 to support Miracle Babies. Holocaust survivor Dr. Edith Eva Eger was the keynote speaker who shared stories of hope, love, forgiveness and resilience. Sponsors included AuraeMD – Dr. Margo Aura Emami, Kendra Scott and Tito’s Handmade Vodka.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. contributed $100,000 to San Diego Habitat for Humanity for Humanity Veteran Programs. Employees from Chase volunteered their time to make critical home repairs to the home of U.S. Navy veteran Lucas and his wife, Brianna. The grant also supports the construction of new Habitat homes in Logan Heights, one of which will be sold to a veteran.

The Innovation in Education Awards was held on Mar. 9 by Teach For America- San Diego at the downtown library. The awards were created by Teach For America-San Diego to elevate the importance of education in San Diego’s economic development. The event, sponsored by ResMed, the Girard Foundation, Nordson Corporation, Northrop Grumman, SDG&E and ViaSat, provided a $2,500 cash award to the four winners.

Elderhelp’s Essence of Life Awards

ElderHelp’s annual Essence of Life Awards was held on Mar. 5 at the Southwestern Yacht Club. The event raised $50,000 for ElderHelp to provide access to medical care, help with grocery shopping and other services to vulnerable seniors. Sponsors included AT&T, Great Call, Sycuan, Sycuan Casino, The Fish Market Restaurants, Kaiser Permanente, A Better Solution and Hill Compliance Advisors. State Assemblyman Todd Gloria assisted in the presentation of the Inspirational Senior award to Fran Styles.

The Sundt Foundation has granted $4,000 to VIP NeuroRehabilitation Center for its Scholarship Program. The organization provides outpatient care to disabled military, veterans, children and others in need. The Alpha Project for the Homeless received $1,500 to support its mission of providing services to the homeless and Rise Up Industries in La Mesa received $2,500 to support gang prevention, intervention and post-detention reentry.
