Art Alive opened at San Diego Museum of Art on Apr. 29 through May 1. The event raised $1.2 million at Bloom Bash. The Presenting Sponsor was Conrad Prebys and Debbie Turner and Audrey S. Geisel/Dr. Seuss Fund of The San Diego Foundation was the Signature Sponsor. The Bloom Bash opening celebration was inspired by  sculptor and designer James Peterson.

Wells Fargo & Company, along with No Barriers Warriors, have selected two teams of veterans with disabilities to participate in the 2016 Warriors to Summits Expeditions I or II. Warriors to Summits participants from 2014,15 and 16 will have the opportunity to apply for an inaugural alumni trek in October in Colorado’s San Juan Range. All three expeditions are sponsored by Wells Fargo.  Warriors to Summits is one of many experiences No Barriers Warriors offers to empower veterans with disabilities to overcome barriers and unleash their potential.

The San Ysidro Community Foundation, an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, hosted a grants celebration at Outlets at the Border. Five organizations that are working to improve the quality of life in San Ysidro, Nestor and Otay Mesa communities, received grants totaling $10,000. The grants will be used to bring individuals and families together to increase community unity. Those receiving grants include Exceptional Athletes, Girl Scouts, Living Coast Discovery Center, San Diego County Bicycle Coalition and I Love a Clean San Diego.

Challenged Sailors San Diego held its second Kyle McArthur Memorial Regatta Apr. 30 and May 1 at Coronado Yacht Club. The event raised $25,000 to help support the program, in memory of LTJG Kyle McArthur, USN, a sailor who was killed in an auto accident in 2013.

Fern Street Circus

Fern Street Circus

Fern Street Circus received a $15,000 grant from the David C. Copley Foundation to help pay for professional coaches for students to learn tumbling, juggling, clowning, tightwire and specialty circus skills.  Fern Street Circus began its public programming as Performing Artists in Residence at San Diego International Airport on May 11. The adult artists of the Circus will be doing pop-up performance and open rehearsals throughout the year.

In celebration of Jewish American Heritage Month, Union Bank has partnered with KPBS to honor three local heroes. Those being honored are Marjorie Morrison, founder and CEO of PsychArmor Institute and Rose and Max Schindler, Holocaust survivors/educators. The honorees will be recognized at a private dinner celebration with their families and executives from KPBS and Union Bank.

USD Honorees

The 21st Annual Alumni Honors celebration on April 30 recognized 10 outstanding University of San Diego alumni for career achievement, contributions to humanitarian causes, extraordinary athletic success and exemplary service to USD.  Those honored include Sam Attisha, Cox Communications; Leigh Ann Brown, former USD soccer player; Pablo Velez, Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center; and Miguel Vasquez, California Foundation Fund Chair.

Molina Healthcare of California recognized five community heroes at its 9th annual Community Champions Awards at the DoubleTree by Hilton.  The winners received a $1,000 grant to give to a charity of their choice. The five winners have contributed to making the lives of individuals and families in San Diego better. “The five Community Champion winners and the each of their nominating organizations, have made a positive difference in San Diego and beyond through their hard work, dedication and selflessness,” said Richard Chambers, president of Molina Healthcare of California.

Grossmont Hospital Golf Tournament

Grossmont Hospital Foundation raised $425,000 for Sharp Grossmont Hospital at the 32nd Annual Grossmont Hospital Invitational Golf Tournament at Sycuan Resort on Apr. 21. Proceeds will support priority initiatives related to patient services and programs at Sharp Grossmont Hospital, including a new, state-of-the-art Heart and Vascular Center. Title sponsors include EDCO Disposal Corporation, Plum Healthcare Group and The Ensign Group. Cisco & Dimension Data and Storvantage & NetApp were the Tournament Level sponsors.
