American Heart Association Holds 25th Anniversary Heart Ball

The American Heart Association held its 25th Anniversary Heart Ball on May 21 at the Estancia La Jolla Hotel. Dr. James Dunford, the late Dr. Thomas Chippendale, and Dr Justin Zivin were recognized for their system and treatment improving work in storke care and research. The event chaired by Gary and Stacy Cady, raised $250,000 to fund AHA research. Sponsors included Torrey Pines Bank and Bill Howe Plumbing.

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation announced grants totaling $270,000 to 31 nonprofits dedicated to providing workforce development and education opportunities. Those receiving support focus on connecting youth and adults, including the unemployed and underserved, to workforce opportunities and education and skills-building. REBOOT San Diego, Accion, Asian Business Association, Barrio Logan College Institute, Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County, Monarch, Ocean Discovery Institute, Reality Changers and Rady Children’s Hospital Foundation were among the others receiving grants.

Jewish Family Service of San Diego’s Positive Parenting Program has received a STARS Award from the Child Abuse Prevention Coordinating Council honoring the program for demonstrated commitment to preventing child abuse in the San Diego community. The fourth annual award ceremony was held on April 21 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Mission Valley.

The Clearity Foundation held its Someone Lived event on June 5 at the L’Auberge Del Mar. Buck Dodson of SPBOCF was honored, as was Ursula Matulonis, M.D.  of the Dana Farber Cancer Center, for advancing research and care of women with Gynecologic cancers.

Smithfield donated 36,000 pounds of protein to Feeding America San Diego. Smithfield partnered with Ralphs and Food 4 Less to make this donation which equals 140,000 servings of protein. Helping Hungry Homes, is Smithfield’s coast-to-coast program to help Americans become more food secure. Casey Hayward and Melvin Ingram, football players, joined representatives from Smithfield, Ralphs and Food 4 Less to present the donation to Feeding America.

Oggi’s Sports /Brewhouse / Pizza teamed up with San Diego Chargers’ LaDainian Tomlinson to hold a celebrity golf tournament at Sycuan Golf Resort on May 12. The $32,000 raised will go to The Tomlinson’s Touching Lives Foundation and the Angelman Syndrom Foundation. All event proceeds will be invested into the foundation’s Southern California programs, working to increase students’ success, providing support to our veterans, and helping to advance the awareness and treatment of Angelman syndrome, a neuro-genetic disorder that affects development, balance and speech.

National University has partnered with Teach for America San Diego to prepare teachers and leaders. The educational institutions will work together to credential a diverse corps of new teachers who will make an initial two-year commitment to serve in low-income schools and become lifelong leaders in the effort to end educational inequity. The corps members will be hired to teach hard-to-staff subject areas in low-income schools across San Diego this fall and commit to working for educational equity.

Senator Ben Hueso, representative of the 40t District presented a check for $46,196 to Ballington Academy for the Arts and Sciences in El Centro. The donation was funded by SB740, the Charter School Facility Grant Program. Hueso also made a personal contribution of a piano valued at $3,000. The school’s curriculum is made possible through Volunteers of America Community and Education Corporation. The current check will be used for facility maintenance, including building upkeep.

Takeda California hosted its seventh annual “Tour de Takeda” on May 27. The company-wide event raised $13,000 by employees and their families walking, running or biking.  For every mile covered by employees, friends and family, TCAL donated $5. Proceeds benefited Volunteers in Medicine, The greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair, Elementary Institute of Science and Southwest Middle School STEAM Program.

Doug and Nancy Barnhart donated $100,000 to the Athletic Rehabilitation Center at University of California San Diego. The gift will be split to create an endowment for the Athletic Rehabilitation Center, as well as to provide current use funding for the greatest needs of the Spanos Athletic Performance Center.

SDHDF Uprising Concert

The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation and the San Diego Women’s Chorus presented the benefit concert “UPRISING: Songs of Change” at the Balboa Theatre on May 22. The concert featuring Grammy Award-Winning Legend Janis Ian, was the third year of collaboration between the two organizations to raise funds for SDHDF’s Lesbian Health Initiative and SDWC.  The $20,000 raised will benefit SDWC as well as San Diego County healthcare organizations who serve low-income lesbians and bisexuals.
