The University of San Diego honored nine outstanding alumni on Apr. 27. The Author E. Hughes Award for Career Achievement was presented to San Diego City Attorney Jan Goldsmith. Other honorees for career achievement included Jeffrey Carlstead, owner of the Hampton Inn-San Diego/Kearny Mesa; James Waring, executive chairman and co-founder of CleanTECH and Sue Hoyt, co-owner of EmergeED. Christopher Grant and Jacqueline Akerblom also received career achievement awards. The Mother Rosalie Clifton Hill Award for Exemplary Service to USD was presented to Terry Liberatore Gase.

The second annual Wine, Women & Shoes fundraiser benefiting Voices for Children is scheduled for May 11 at Lucky Jack Farm in Rancho Santa Fe, the equestrian facility of Patricia and Marc Brutten. All event  proceeds and a portion of retail sales benefit Voices for Children to provide volunteer advocates to foster youth. Sponsors include Hughes-Marino, Wells Fargo, Sycuan, First Foundation and Cox

VinDiego Wine and Food Festival

The VinDiego Wine and Food Festival was held on Apr.6 at the Broadway Pier Pavilion. VinDiego guests enjoyed California wines, as well as the finest food artisans from acrossSan Diego’s broad culinary spectrum. Vitners and culinary artisans from some of California’s most renowned winers, bakeries and restaurants were on hand to share their knowledge, skills and enthusiasm.  Through the silent auction and individual donations, they were able to raise $8,400 for Freedom Station USA and help injured and disabled military.

Casa de Amparo held the 2013 Meet the Chefs of Del Mar on Apr. 14 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Signature Chef Sponsors included Harrahs, ProFlowers, Wells Fargo, San Diego Chargers, DJO Global and Tri-City Medical Center.

Bank of America recently introduced their new national advertising campaign. This is the second year in a row Bank of America has featured San Diego companies in its television ad campaigns. The organization being highlighted is the CleanTECH BioFuel program. B of A is focused on the innovation economy sector and their partnership with CleanTECH San Diego over the years has produced positive results.

Health Care Communicators of San Diego awarded Cook + Schmid four Gold Awards at the annual Finest Awards ceremony, which recognizes outstanding health care and health-related communications and public relations campaigns. Cook + Schmid won the awards for its “Fight the Bite” campaign, a public education program to increase awareness to help prevent West Nile Virus, conducted on behalf of the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health.

Pawsitively Patriotic

The 19th Annual Walk for Animals Pawsitively Patriotic will be held on May 4 at NTC Park at Liberty Station. Funds raised will help provide the vital dollars needed to care for the 10,000 homeless that will be cared for by the San Diego Humane Society & SPCA this year. Major event sponsors include Petco, Petco Foundation, Phil’s B B Q, Ralphs, Underground Elephant and Humane Vet Hospital.

The Grand Del Mar has been named recycler of the year for the second consecutive year by the City of San Diego for its ambitious recycling and conservation programs. Awards were given to San Diego businesses during the 21st Annual Waste Reduction and Diversion Awards Program, presented by Mayor Bob Filner and the City of San Diego’s Environmental Services Department, on Earth Day, Monday, April 22, at the San Diego International Airport. Each year, these awards pay tribute to innovative companies that have implemented successful waste reduction, reuse, recycling and recycled product procurement programs. According to Tom Voss, president of The Grand Del Mar, the resort has continued its keen focus on conserving natural resources by expanding its conservation programs and hiring a full-time sustainability manager during the last year.

Pug Rescue of San Diego County celebrates their 22nd anniversary with a Super Hero themed Pug Party on May 4 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Infield Pavilion. All proceeds provide medical care and comfort to Pugs in foster care until they find a home of their own.
