United Through reading’s 8th Annual Storybook Ball was held at the Coronado Island Marriott. The organization raised $250,000 to support the mission of connecting military families through the powerful and bonding experience of reading aloud. The funds will allow UTR to continue to bring bedtime stories home to military children, to connect them with their parent serving from a distance, and to encourage those service members to create memories and build stability for the children they love through story time. The Title Sponsor was, BAE Systems. Other sponsors included Audrey S. Geisel and the Dr. Seuss Fund at San Diego Foundation, Buchanan Design and G2 Software Systems.

Farrell Family, San Diego Center for Children

Farrell Family, San Diego Center for Children

The Farrell Family Foundation awarded a 3-year grant for $105,000 to support the  Intensive Reading Program at the San Diego Center for Children. The ResMed Foundation approved a $10,000 grant for the Math Improvement program. The Academy specializes in supporting students whose mental, emotional and behavioral disorders impact their academic performance in a traditional classroom setting.

Sgt. Major Cain & Jennifer Telfer – Toys for Tots

Pillow Pets joined with Toys for Tots to distribute holiday gifts to less fortunate children on Nov. 30 at Pillow Pets headquarters in Carlsbad. The Pillow Pets valued at $25,000, will help children in their time of need. Sgt.Maj Cain of San Diego U.S. Marine Corp and Jennifer Telfer, CEO of CJ Products made the official presentation of the donation.

MARKET Restaurant celebrated its 10-year anniversary  with a $5,000 donation to The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. The funds will help provide 25,000 meals to San Diego residents in need.

Bank of America distributed $172,500 in grants to 22 nonprofits on “Giving Tuesday”. Funding will help San Diegan’s gain greater economic mobility through increased access to food, shelter, benefits and other fundamental needs that will enable them to move toward long-term stability. Among those receiving a grant is Downtown San Diego Partnership. Kris Michell, President and CEO of the Downtown San Diego Partnership said, “Their generous donation helps to fund programs like our Family Reunification Program.”

Central San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce

Central San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce

The CSDBCC’s 6th Annual Fundraising and Awards Gala was held on Nov. 19 at the US Grant Hotel. The Lifetime Leadership Award was presented to William D. Jones, Director, Sempra Energy and President/CEO of CityLink Investment Corp. Proceeds benefit the Central San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund and Youth Programs. Platinum sponsors included Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Qualcomm, SDG&E, Honda and NWB Environmental Services.

The San Diego chapter of the ARCS Foundation has awarded $255,000 to s4 graduate students at the University of California San Diego. The annual fellowship awards recognize students who are pursuing research in the natural sciences, engineering and medicine. ARCS Foundation is dedicated to boosting American leadership in science and technology by supporting promising undergraduate and graduate students.

Wine & Wishes 2016, the annual signature event for Make-A-Wish San Diego, was held on Oct. 23 at the Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad. Napa Valley winemakers supported the event and local San Diego eateries provided food. Funds raised will grant wishes to children in San Diego.

Teach For America-San Diego’s Gather & Give Friend Raiser was held on Oct. 27 at the Prado in Balboa Park. $40,000 was raised was to support recruitment and development of a diverse corps of outstanding college graduates and professionals who make an initial two-year commitment to teach in high-need schools.

The 9th World Symposium on Vision Disorders was held Nov. 16-18 at The Grande Colonial, La Jolla. The event was hosted by The Vision of Children Foundation and raised $46,000 to support the gathering of scientists and families at the Symposium. A net amount of $14,000 will support research to cure vision disorders. Sponsors were Allergan Foundation, Epstein Family Foundation, Isakow Family Foundation and San Diego Private Bank.

Reality Changers & ATT

Reality Changers & ATT

Reality Changers is one of 18 recipients nationwide to share in $10 million from AT&T through the Aspire Connect to Success Competition due to its success supporting and motivating underserved students to stay in school and prepare for their next step in life. Reality Changers received a grant of $500,000. Through a competitive request for proposal process, the 18 non-profits, including Reality Changers, were selected based on their effectiveness in helping students graduate ready for career and college.
