San Diego State University recieves a $25 Million Pledge

San Diego State University has received a $25 million pledge from Ron Fowler and his wife Alexis to SDSU’s College of Business Administration that will provide scholarships and professorships, develop a lecture series, and provide international experiences and expanded programming for SDSU business students. The College of Business will be renamed the Fowler College of Business Administration. The pledge was established as a matching gift to provide a challenge to the university and its supporters to raise an additional $25 million for the college.

Lesley Ann Warren was the Celebrity Honorary Chair of City Ballet’s 24th Anniversary Gala held on Oct. 22 at the Hotel del Coronado. Guests enjoyed a performance by City Ballet Company dancers who also joined the guests for dinner. The event raised $100,000 to help fund educational and outreach programs such as the “Discover a Dancer” program. Hotel del Coronado is the Season Sponsor. Other sponsors for the event included US Bank, Pressnet Express and Red-Haired Celtic Woman Productions.

Project Concern International held its 27th annual Hands Across Borders gala on Oct. 22 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine raising $500,000. PCI honored Southwest Airlines with the 2016 Corporate Leadership Award. Larry and Mary Lynn Weitzen received the PCI Founder’s Award for their lifelong support of the organization’s humanitarian project. PCI’s Hero Award was presented to Gregoria Quiroz, a volunteer community health worker.

The Mt. Soledad Veteran’s Memorial received a $500,000 pledge from Papa Doug Manchester to formally kickoff a campaign to reimburse the $1.4 million to the Association that was used to purchase the half-acre site from the Federal Government.  The Memorial will pay homage to veterans who have served our country and will serve to educate the public on the contributions of military personnel throughout history. Other donors to the fund include Jack McGrory, Dick Woltman, Dr. Peter Farrell and Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Indians.

YMCA Youth & Family Services held its 8th annual “Angels Among Us” event on Oct. 14 at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens in Liberty Station. The event raised $40,000 to support vulnerable youth and families throughout San Diego County. Sponsors included Old Town Trolley and Horse of the Sun Ranch.

Burn Institute

The Burn Institute Auxiliary and San Diego Fire Chiefs’ Association teamed up to raise funds for the Burn Institute. The 6th Annual Chiefs’ Golf Classic & Party in the Paddock was held on Octt. 15 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Paddock. The Golf Classic was held on Oct. 3 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Course. The two part event raised $100,000 for vital fire and burn prevention education and burn survivor support services. Sponsors included Air Products, SDG&E, American Medical Response, Procopio and Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation.

The Moonlight Cultural Foundation received a $45,671 donation from Forte for Children on Oct. 20. The donation will support Moonlight Cultural Foundation’s arts programs.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County held its 54th Annual Gourmet Dinner on Oct. 20 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. The event themed “Building Futures,” honored John Frager as Person of the Year and emceed by Blb Scanlan, former Major League Baseball pitcher. A net $650,000 was raised for BBBS’s one-to-one mentoring programs. Title Sponsors were Alexandria Release Estate Equities and PIRCH.

On Oct. 20 the third annual Century Club Too-Off Celebration kick off the 2017 Champions for Youth fund raising season. This is the core charitable program of The Century Club of San Diego, which is the administrative organization behind San Diego’s PGA TOUR event, the Farmers Insurance Open. The 2017 organizations include: Armed Services YMCA San Diego, Boys to Men Mentoring Network, Junior Achievement of San Diego County, Monarch School and Promises2Kids.
