Maryanne & Harley Sefton Honored at Wine D’Vine

Walden Family Services honored Maryanne and Harley Sefton with the inaugural Fostering Hearts Legacy Award at Wine D’Vine which was held at Estancia Hotel on Oct. 28. The Seftons have made a lasting commitment to ensure that children and youth in foster care have opportunities to become vibrant, productive members of the community. In honor of Walden’s 40th anniversary, the evening featured rock legend John Fogerty, formerly with Creedence Clearwater Revival.  The event raised $675,000 to help support children, youth and families served by Walden. Sponsors included AJW Facilities and Construction, Marty & David Pendarvis, Barney & Barney, Dowling & Yahnke, the Farrell Family Foundation, Balboa Travel and Union Bank.

Ramona Community Foundation, an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, awarded $39,700 to 10 nonprofits at its Annual Grants Celebration on Oct. 13 at Schwaesdall Winery. Some of those receiving funds were ArtReach, Healthy Girls, Ramona Sobering Center, Ramona Meals on Wheels and Trauma Intervention Programs of San Diego. RCF is dedicated to improving the quality of life and meeting emerging needs in Ramona.

The Salvation Army Red Kettle Kick Off is being held on Nov. 17 at the Westgate Hotel. Corbin Bernsen, star of L.A. Law, and PSYCH, is guest star. Proceeds benefit the holiday programs of The Salvation Army in San Diego County.

ElderHelp

ElderHelp of San Diego held an open house at their new hom a The Connections Center in Kearny Mesa. Sponsors were California Bank & Trust, The Gay & Lesbian Fund for San Diego, Country Wine & Spirits and Anderson Direct & Digital. ElderHelp provides personalized services and information to help seniors live independently with dignity in their homes.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego held two sporting fundraising events – the 14th annual Don Coryell Charity Golf Classic presented by the Morgan Family Foundation on Oct. 28 and the US Bank Bayside Toss for Kids Cornhole Tournament presented by SPARK, Friends of the BGCGSD on Oct. 29. The golf tournament raised $57,000 to help serve the youth of National City at the Payne Family Branch in National City. The Bayside Toss for Kids raised $4,200 which will help to fund Thanksgiving baskets for families in need at Clubs throughout San Diego County.

United Through Reading received a $125,000 grant from Reader’s Digest Foundation. The foundation feels strongly about supporting the parent or caregiver’s role in childhood literacy, and the grant will support UTR work to ensure military parents understand the importance of reading to their children from an early age while making it possible to do so despite deployments or challenging separations.

San Diego March of Dimes held its annual Signature Chefs Gala on Oct. 2 at the Paddock at Del Mar Race Track. The event netted $185,000 to support the MoD mission to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Sponsors included Illumina, Ashford University, Sequenom, La Jolla Oral & Facial Surgery and Boulder OMS.

The San Diego County Bar Foundation’s 19th annual “Evening in La Jolla,” held on Sept. 19 at the Birch Aquarium, raised $120,000.  Proceeds provide legal assistance to those in challenging circumstances, such as foster children and at-risk youth, domestic violence victims, sick and disabled individuals, refugees, and the elderly. Sponsors included Cohelan Khoury & Singer; Best Best & Krieger; Procopio; General Dynamics NASSCO and The Morrison & Foerster Foundation.

Satterberg Foundation, The Parker Foundation, The California Endowment, and Ford Foundation provided funds totaling $344,200 through the Leadership Development Project, for five nonprofit collaborative efforts that empower community leaders in under-represented communities to advance social justice policies and achieve positions of influence. The LDP, a philanthropic collaboration facilitated by San Diego Grantmakers, is an association for organizations and individuals that give strategically and significantly to multiple nonprofits each year.
