Gary and Mary West Senior Dental Center Opens

The Gary and Mary West Senior Dental Center Center recently held a grand opening ceremony. The Center is dedicated to serving low-income seniors in San Diego. Their foundation donated $2 million in grants to cover costs for construction, dental equipment and start-up operations. The have also announced a matching grant up to $250,000 in individual contributions to support seniors at the Center. The Center links high-quality and affordable oral healthcare with a suite of nutrition, case management and wellness services. According to the CDC, seniors have a higher rate of new tooth decay than children and are prone to issues like dry mouth, tooth loss, oral cancer and periodontal disease.

The Emilio Nares foundation held its 13th annual “Harvest For Hope” fundraiser on Oct. 2 at the San Diego Central Library. The event raised $250,000 to fund programs that navigate families through their child’s journey with cancer.

The Sanford Institute of Philanthropy at National University presented Malin Burnham with the 2016 Humanitarian of the Year Award at a reception held on Oct. 18. The award was presented by National University System Chancellor Dr. Michael Cunningham and Dr. Lena Rodriguez, Director of the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy at National University. Burnham, one of San Diego’s most renowned philanthropists and business leaders, recently published a book “Community Before Self”. Burnham is donating all proceeds from the book to The San Diego Foundation.

The San Diego Public Library Foundation’s third annual Celebration Under the Dome was held on Oct. 7. The event raised $600,000 to support innovative programming and technology. Qualcomm was the Title Sponsor for the evening.  Other sponsors included SDG&E, Dr. Seuss Fund of The San Diego Foundation, Kenneth K. and Harle G. Montgomery Foundation, Cubic, Bank of America/Merrill Lynch, Manpower, Higgs, Fletcher & Back and AT&T. Joan and Irwin Jacobs and Audrey S. Geisel were Honorary Chairs.

Cox Charities has awarded $80,000 to 25 nonprofit organizations to fund programs focused on youth, education, military families and conservation. An additional $5,000 was offered to the organization that had the most votes cast on Cox California’s Twitter page. Some of the recipients of grants were: South Bay Community Services, Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center, Operation Gratitude, San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy and San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum.

The San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy celebrated its 30th anniversary by presenting the 7th annual River Valley Fest, “Passion for the Park” at the Fairbanks Country Club.  The even raised $120,000 to support the Conservancy.  Sponsors included Event Sponsor BioMed Realty, Stone Brewing and Southcoast Winery.

The Sheckler Foundation’s “Be the Change” Initiatives held the Ryan Sheckler’s Gala and 9th Annual Golf Tournament at the Del Mar Country Club. The event sponsored by Oakley, raised $300,000 to benefit injured action sports athletes and children in need.

Helen Woodward Animal Center’s 11th Annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon was held on Oct. 2 after having postponed from Sept. 11 due to a water contamination advisory at Dog Beach in Del Mar. Blue Buffalo was the Presenting Sponsor  an others included SeaWorld, Sharp Healthcare and California Bank & Trust. The $4,000 raised support the Center’s orphan pets and programs.

The New Children’s Museum held its annual benefit, “A Night in California” on Oct. 14. The event raised $92,000. Sponsors include Bank of America, COX, Dawson & Ozanne, ESET, First Republic Bank, The San Diego Foundation and Sharp Business Systems. Sheryl and Harvey White were presented with the Museum Supporter Award.

Grossmont Hospital Foundation celebrated its 31st Annual Gala on Oct. 15 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. The event raised $340,000 toward Sharp Grossmont Hospital’s David and Donna Long Center for Cancer Treatment. Sandy Jackman and Mona Pear were this year’s event chairs. Connie Conard was Honorary chair. Presenting sponsors included the Glenn Napierskie Family and Sharp Grossmont Hospital Medical staff.
