The USD Founders’ Gala, named in honor of founders Bishop Charles Francis Buddy and Mother Rosalie Clifton Hill, raised a record amount of $685,000 on Nov. 14 to benefit the Founders’ Endowed Scholarship Fund. Honorary Chairs Andrew and Kim Busch along with USD President James T.Harris III DEd and  Mary  Harris welcomed guests to the Jenny Craig Pavilion where the event was held. The Legacy Sponsor was Coca-Cola. Heritage Sponsors included Bartell Hotels, CYMER, Shiley Foundation and US Bank. Swarovski sponsored the auction reception.

In celebration of its 50th Anniversary, Timken Museum of Art held its Black & Orange Ball on Oct. 30 beginning with a reception at the museum and followed by a dinner and After Dark Cocktail Party.  The museum’s newest acquisition was unveiled at the event which raised $214,000 to benefit their arts education and outreach programs. Sponsors included SnakeOil Cocktail Company, Milagro Farms Vineyard & Winery and Torrey Pines Bank.

Bank of the West announced the winners of its sixth annual Philanthropy Awards at a dinner held on Nov. 18 at the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts in Stanford, Ca. Barrio Logan College Institute and Lava Mae, a San Francisco organization, were awarded $100,000 grants, BLCI the Community Impact Award and Lava Mae the Innovation Award. “Commitment to community is a core value for Bank of the West,” said Michael Shepherd, Chairman and CEO of Bank of the West. “Along with the expertise we provide to help customers achieve their financial goals, we are proud to give back through corporate philanthropy, charitable investments and bank-wide volunteerism.

Christopher Kane, MD, has been appointed the inaugural holder of the Joseph D. Schmidt, MD Presidential Chair in Urology in the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. The $3.3 million endowed faculty chair was created in honor of Dr. Schmidt, professor emeritus. Schmidt served as chief of the Division of Urology at UC San Diego for 30 years.

The University of California, San Diego received a $400,000 pledge from Joseph E. Edelman which will benefit students in need of ongoing psychiatric services, while also improving opportunities for specialized fellowship training and clinical research in college mental health. In September 2014, the university’s Department of Psychiatry implemented the UC San Diego College Mental Health program.

In honor of the centennial celebration of the California-Panama Exposition, Patrons of the Prado dedicated a Centennial Time Capsule which was assembled at a ceremony on Nov. 16. The buried collection contains artifacts of the cultural treasures of Balboa Park. It will lie in the Old Globe Craig Noel Garden. The evening included distribution of $58,000 to each of the 11 Balboa Park beneficiary Institutions funded by Patrons of the Prado.

The 2nd Annual Solana Beach Sunset 5K Run/Walk was held on Nov. 14 at Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach. HHSA Health Champions was the Presenting Sponsor. The event was held in partnership with the San Diego County Medical Society and included Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce, UC San Diego Health System, T&M Mechanical Sales and Solana Executive Plaza were among the sponsors. The event raised $35,000 to support diabetes prevention.

United Through Reading held its 7th annual Storybook Ball on Nov. 14 celebrating receiving a Library of Congress Literacy Award. San Diego Gas & Electric was recognized for the company’s dedication to military and their provision of $500,000 in charitable grants last year to 75 non-profit organizations that support military and veterans. Coronado resident Carol Raiter was recognized with the Extraordinary Service Award to UTR. The event raised $100,000 to support military families.
