The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary announced the 2014-15 Women of Dedication honorees at its 50th annual Presentation Tea hosted by Rosalie Gerevas. Those being honored are selected and recognized for their dedication to the San Diego community for their volunteerism, philanthropy and support of the community. Those being honored are: Vicki Baron, Dr. Constance Carroll, Molly Cartmill, Diana Annala Chalmers, Judith Jarcho, Dr. Elizabeth Jones, Lisa Lundgren, Cinda Lucas, Micki Olin, Doreen Schonbrun, Marti Showley, Holly Smith Jones, Lois Stanton and Lori Walton. The luncheon is set for April 7, 2015 at the San Diego Hilton Bayfront.

Interfaith Community Service received a $300,000 contribution from AT&T to assist in launching the Transitional Youth Academy program at El Camino High School in Oceanside. The program is operated by Interfaith Community Services in partnership with Oceanside Unified School District and has been successful in improving graduation rates for at-risk youth. The program currently serves 55 students at Oceanside High School, and with AT&T’s contribution, will serve an additional 60 students at El Camino High School.

Project Concern International held its 26th annual Hands Across Borders gala on Nov. 15 at the San Diego Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier. More than $500,000 was raised to serve children around the world. Three philanthropists were honored at the event. Anne Otterson received the organization’s Founder’s Award for her work in making a difference in the lives of children. Actress Stephanie March presented the Humanitarian Award to Harry Leibowitz and Kay Isaacson-Leibowitz, co-founders of the World of Children Award, for serving vulnerable children worldwide. “PCI is committed to transforming the lives of children and families living in desperate poverty around the world,” said PCI President & CEO George Guimaraes.

San Diego County Credit Union sponsored two special events that benefited Rady Children’s Hospital. SDCCU collected $6,000 in donations by selling paper balloons for the Hospital Walk which was held on Oct. 26. In addition, SDCCU was title sponsor for the 25th annual Kids’ News Day held on Oct. 21. That event raised $107,000 to benefit the hospital.

Westgate Hotel’s Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Celebration and fundraiser will be held on Dec. 4 in the Grand Lobby with holiday carols performed by Carpice, an ensemble from the North Coast Singers. Dancers from the California Ballet will present a special recital. Guests at Santa’s Workshop will take place in the Versailles Ballroom for cookie decorating and a string ensemble performance by the Mainly Mozart Youth Orchestra. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Mainly Mozart Youth Orchestra and the North Coast Singers.

The Salk Institute celebrated its founder’s 100th birthday on Nov. 13 with a private concert with Itzhak Perlman. Nathan Wolfe, founder and CEO of Metabiota gave a talk followed by Perlman’s recital in remembrance of Jonas Salk. Irwin Jacobs, Salk’s board chair, presented Perlman with the Salk Institute Medal for Public Service for his work in helping to eradicate polio. Perlman is the fifth person to receive this award.

The 31st Annual Silver Tea to benefit St. Germaine Children’s Charity is being held on Dec. 9 at a private estate in La Jolla. Underwriters include Donald Daley & Taunya Daley, Diane Hollingsworth and The Lyman Family Foundation. STAR/PAL, Walden Family Services, Aseltine School and Armed Services YMCA San Diego are some of the 2014 grant recipients.

San Diego Center for Children was named 2014 Neighborhood Builder by The Bank of America Charitable Foundation. Neighborhood Builders is a strategic investment in communities that combines $200,000 in flexible funding with leadership training for high-performing nonprofits and their executives. “This investment will empower them to build leadership capacity and expand to meet the evolving needs in our community,” said Rick Bregman, Market President Bank of America.
