STAR/PAL sponsors the 21st Annual “Shop with a Cop”

The 21st Annual “Shop with a Cop” event was held on Dec. 6. The event is sponsored by law enforcement agencies, SeaWorld, Target, STAR/PAL, and the San Diego Crime Commission. This year the event was co-hosted by the La Mesa Police and El Cajon Police Departments. The event is designed to provide underserved youth with a happier holiday season and also to encourage positive interaction with law enforcement. STAR/PAL offers educational, athletic, and recreational programs which focus on promoting youth safety, positive life choices, civic engagement and academic success.

National University nursing students and faculty recognized families in need with the annual Holiday Cheer event held at the University’s Spectrum Business Park Campus on Dec. 5. The School of Health and Human Services at National University provided gifts for six San Diego families. Each family created wish lists which were supplemented by educational games, gift cards and other items from National University. The families were identified by agency partnerships as well as through student work during practical experience at local clinics and locations.

Walden Family Services has been nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. Walden is one of the first foster family agencies in California to receive the accreditation. CARF accredits only those organizations that provide services that center on enhancing the lives of persons served. “This accreditation helps us continue to carry out Walden’s mission of ensuring that every child has a loving family and the ability to realize their greatest potential toward becoming a self-sufficient and productive member of the community,” said Teresa Stivers, executive director of Walden Family Services.

After the opening of San Diego Central Library one year ago, the Library turned to GPON – gigabit passive optical networking, a technology typically used in telecom fiber networks. GPON has enabled the library to offer patrons fast speeds over a highly-reliable network. Library administrators have credited their use of technology for meeting a key metric of increasing the number of visitors a day. The goal for the new library was 1,600 compared to 800 at the old library. One year later, average daily patronage is at 3,000.

La Jolla author Jeff Wolf is donating 100% of the proceeds from his new book, Seven Disciplines of a Leader, to Warrior Foundation-Freedom Station from a book signing event on Dec. 11. Proceeds will be used to fund quality-of-life items, support services and transitional housing for service members who were injured in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A Holiday Fashion Show and Luncheon was hosted by Mille Fleurs, featuring Maggie B and Mister B clothing on Nov. 12. The luncheon raised $7,000 to benefit Casa de Amparo. The event raised $7,000, to benefit Casa de Amparo, a nonprofit organization that treats and prevents child abuse and neglect.

Hillcrest Taste n’ Tinis

Hillcrest Taste n’ Tinis

The Hillcrest Business Association sponsored Taste ‘n’ Tinis on Dec. 11. The event featured holiday shopping, appetizers and entrees, martinis and seasonal holiday music. San Diego’s Historic Hillcrest Neighborhood provided for a guided walking tour of over 30 restaurants, retailers and bars. The Village Hat Shop, Hillcrest Brewing Company, Fiesta Cantina, Americana Clothing, Crest Café and East Coast Pizza.

PATH recognized  Urban Angels with a special kitchen and dining ceremony at Connections Housing on Dec. 18. Urban Angels provides breakfast and dinner 365 days a year to 150 individuals housed through PATH/Alpha Project’s Interim Housing Program. The meals at Connections Housing are entirely funded by local San Diego gym chain, Fit Athletic Club, who donates 100 percent of proceeds Urban Angels.

San Diego based Petco Foundation in partnership with Halo, Purely for Pets, awarded $500,000 in grants to 33 animal welfare organizations across the United States.  The second annual holiday grant campaign, Holiday Wishes, is designed to help the most dedicated animal welfare organizations succeed in their mission to save pets’ lives at the holidays and year round.  Animal Alliance of New Jersey was awarded the grand prize of $100,000 to support its mission to save animal lives.
