Darlene Marcos Shiley was a major sponsor of this year’s Globe Gala held on Sept. 21. Corporate sponsors included Qualcomm, Torrey Pines Bank, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom. “Every year the Globe Gala gets better and better, and over time has become the single most important annual fundraiser for our theatre,” said Managing Director Michael G. Murphy. “With a net income of $1 million, this event raises nearly 20% of our annual contributed income, generating vital funds for artistic and education programs for all of San Diego County.”
Rock The Foundation led by Barney & Barney was held on Sept. 19 at the Paddock at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The headline sponsor was CHUBB with other key sponsors including Guardian, Aetna, AIX Group, California Bank & Trust, UNUM, First Insurance Funding, Sun Life Financial and CRC Crump. The Barney & Barney Foundation has awarded grants to nine nonprofit organizations in San Diego, Orange County and the San Francisco Bay area. The San Diego organizations receiving grants were Alpha Project, $20,000; Crossroad Foundation, Elizabeth Hospice, I Love a Clean San Diego, and Jacobs Cushman San Diego Food Bank all received $10,000 grants. The Foundation has granted $1 million to 60 organizations in the four years since its inception throughout the state of California.

The 3rd annual San Diego County Fire Chiefs’ Association Gala and Golf Classic was held on Oct. 12 and Oct. 14. Sunroad Enterprises hosted the Gala at the Paddock Green at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and a day of golf at Maderas Golf Club in Poway. Proceeds from both events benefit the The Burn Institute’s fire and burn prevention education and burn survivor support programs including Camp Beyond The Scars for burn- injured children. Other sponsors included Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, Farmers Insurance, Air Products and Chemicals and SDG&E.
United Way of San Diego County is one of only six United Ways to be part of a nationwide “Collective Impact” initiative, funded by a $1 million investment from Target. “This is a tremendous honor for us, helping us build a new civic infrastructure to increase our work in early-grade reading and kindergarten readiness for the San Diego region,” said Doug Sawyer, president and CEO, United Way of San Diego.
The San Diego Police Foundation Gold Seal Gala is being held on Nov. 9 at the Fairbanks Country Club. The event is being sponsored by SDG&E, a Sempra Energy Company. Funds raised at the event supports the Foundation’s programs to purchase equipment, training and outreach programs for San Diego Police Officers not covered by their budget.
monarch school yoga demo
The Sonima Foundation in Encinitas expanded its school yoga program with a one-year, $62,000 grant to provide yoga for Monarch School, which serves children affected by homelessness. When Sonima board members learned about Monarch and its mission, they decided they wanted to build a relationship with the students and positively affect the community by adding a yoga curriculum to their lives. When Monarch School opened their new campus last spring, it provided the physical space to offer the program.
Walden Family Services is presenting its 10th Annual Wine D’Vine on Oct. 30 at the Grand Del Mar. Diamond in the Rough is presented by TEAM, Trust Employee Administrations & Management. All of the proceeds will support the programs of Walden providing treatment to foster care and adoption services to children in need. Walden serves the most tragic of cases, children who are mentally and physically disabled, developmentally delayed, autistic, and have special health care needs. Walden serves youth who have been removed from their homes as a result of abuse, neglect or abandonment.
EasyTurf partnered with Gary Sinise and his Lt. Dan Band at Naval Medical Centr on Oct. 12 to honor wounded service members and the staff who care for them. A picnic lunch was provided by celebrity chef Robert Irvine. This was the second year of the event, and EasyTurf’s involvement.
