The 28th Annual Celebration and Auction “Through the Looking Glass”, was held on Apr. 30 at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort raising $735,000. The annual Faithful Servant Award was presented to Pastor Tim & Beverly LaHaye and Frank & Connie Sciacca. Proceeds support critical programs on campus and also the William Wardrip Foundation and SFC global missions. The Local band, Haute Chili, provided the entertainment.
Father Joe’s Villages’ 2016 Children’s Charity Gala was held on May 21 t the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. The $300,000 raised will support youth programs at Father Joe’s Villages, including Toussiant Academy and the Therapeutic Childcare Center. The Father Joe’s Villages Award was presented to Danny Martinez for his volunteer efforts and The Pierre Toussaint Award was presented to the Navarra family, owners of Jerome’s Furniture, for their support.
The San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum Spring Gala raised $67,000 which is double the amount raised last year. The funds will go to programming, providing children and families hands-on science, art, and world culture experiences to bridge the gap in early childhood education. Sponsors included Sabor de Vida Brazilian Grill, The San Diego Foundation, New Urban West, Rancho Valencia Resort and Snake Oil Cocktail Co.
The San Diego Foundation awarded grants totaling $100,000 to 5 local artist fellows. Through the Creative Catalyst Program, each artist will receive a 12-month, $20,000 grant to produce and showcase a work of art. Fellows are matched with a community-based arts and culture organization to provide mentorship, build new partnerships and engage community members through the arts.

Wells Fargo is the Title Sponsor for Ronald McDonald House Red Shoe Day being held on June 23. Other sponsors include McDonalds San Diego County, Geico, Kleinfelder and UPS Stores. Red Shoe Drive is the largest volunteer-driven fundraiser of the year for RMDHCSD. Funds raised help keep families strong in the days and nights of caring for hospitalized children.
EcoVivarium received a $15,000 grant donation from The John Krakauer Charitable Trust, which supports public charities with a focus on education in San Diego. The grant will support program growth and outreach, including its summer camp program. Susan Nowicke, president of EcoVivarium said, “Thanks to their support we are better able to expand the reach and resources available for our community education programs and to expand our summer programming as well.”
The San Diego Council on Literacy hosted its seventh annual Eat.Drink.Read. “A Culinary Event for Literacy”on May 18 at Liberty Station. The $30,000 raised will support 25 literacy programs in San Diego County and the 120 children’s books that were donated will be distributed to the non-profit affiliates.
SDG&E and the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation sponsored School’s Out, Hunger’s Not, Summer Food Drive. Albertsons and Vons supermarkets partnered with the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank to help fill it shelves this summer. The program will run throughout June.
“Albertsons, Vons, SDG&E and Sycuan have been outstanding long-term supporters of the Food Bank, and their help this summer will shore up our food supply so we can meet the spike in demand from families with children who are living in poverty,” said Jim Floros, president & CEO.
The San Diego Women’s Foundation 16th Annual Grant Celebration was held on June 2. A total of $184,000 was awarded to five nonprofit organizations focused on Developing Employment Readiness. This year 2016 grants focused on Developing Employment Readiness. Grant recipients will use the money for programs that provide career-specific education, training or work experiences that increase access to San Diego’s labor market and the prospect of long-term financial self-sufficiency.

Center for Community Solutions held its 17th Annual Tea and Tonic at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar. HD Supply Facilities Maintenance was the Premier Sponsor. Contributing Sponsors included the Patricia and Christopher Weil Family Foundation, The California Endowment, the Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Nation and ProSight Insurance Services. The $200,000 raised will benefit CCS’s domestic violence and sexual assault programs, including emergency response teams, a 24-hour hotline and prevention education outreach programs.
