Green Flash Friendship Brew Black Saison (5.7% ABV)
Back in Spring, I wrote about Green Flash Brewing Company brewmaster Chuck Silva teaming for a second time with Alexis Briol from Belgium’s Brasserie St. Feuillien to create a collaboration beer called Friendship Brew. That beer, a black saison, combines both brewers’ individual expertise—Briol is a masterful crafter of saisons while Silva is well known for hop fortification. Chocolate wheat malt gives the beer a dark brown color and light dark chocolate notes. That cocoa, when combined with hops and the American yeast strain added in tandem with traditional Belgian saison yeast, overshadows the typical floral notes of a saison, making this taste more like a black Belgian pale ale, but the flavors are so enjoyable, and the beer so drinkable, quality trumps classification.

Though Silva and Briol struck up a fast friendship, getting their beer to market has taken a bit of time. But when Friendship Brew hits store shelves, it’ll be out in force and available just about everywhere quality craft beers are sold. Or, you can venture to its center of origin and enjoy some straight from Green Flash’s taps in Mira Mesa (6550 Mira Mesa Boulevard).
