For having a strong Tagalog-fluent community, Mira Mesa has been woefully under-lumpia’d. That should change soon when Manila Sunset, one of the better Filipino restaurants in town opens its second location, first in Mira Mesa (9837 Mira Mesa Blvd., near Trader Joe’s and Filippi’s just east of I-15). They’ve nabbed the spot across the street (634 Pearl St., the former home of Marrakesh), which will triple their size to fit about 100 people for fish tacos and salmon burgers on their fine china (paper plates). Elpescadorfishmarket.com… Speaking of tripling in size, Point Loma’s favorite Thai hole-in-the-wall Supannee (2907 Shelter Island Dr.) has annexed the space next door and will unveil the expansion later this year. Sdthai.com… Very, very interesting new pizza joint opening in South Park called Buona Forchetta, which includes World Pizza Champions, an heir to an olive oil empire and one helluva wood-fired oven. For the full story, click here…. Former El Vitral chef Norma Martinez is opening Chaplos at the 163 entrance to Downtown (925 B Street). The Tijuana-raised, French-trained chef can cook. It's set to open late-October.
