Beer of the Week: Sept. 28

Offbeat Bear Arms Brown Ale (6.5% ABV)

Offbeat Bear Arms Brown Even with over 50 breweries operating throughout the county, brown ales can be tough to come by. The finest local examples of the style include AleSmith Nautical Nut Brown, Manzanita Gillespie Brown (both former San Diego Magazine Beers of the Week) and New English Brewer’s Special Brown. This newest addition to the scene’s brown subcategory ranks right up there with that trio. Smooth and easy-drinking, this initial offering from recently arrived Escondido brewing company, Offbeat, it tastes like chocolate-covered malted milk balls dipped in blonde-roast coffee.

Check out this beer and a painting of its avatar—a bald, ripped dude with a pair of growling grizzly bears in place of his upper appendages—along with rotating canvassed art from other North County artists at Offbeat Brewing Company’s business park facility (1223 Pacific Oaks Pl., Ste 101). Open just three weeks, it’s already gaining a following and a solid reputation behind beers like this one that are low on alcohol but big on flavor.
