Beer of the Week: October 26
Green Flash's Flanders Drive

Flanders-style Red Sour Ale (6.9% ABV)
Fresh off their spectacular double-gold and singular-silver performance at the Great American Beer Festival (the largest brewing competition in the country), Mira Mesa’s Green Flash Brewing Company (6550 Mira Mesa Blvd) is again making headlines, this time for releasing its first ever sour beer. It’s the last beer they brewed at their old Vista brewhouse before moving to Mira Mesa in summer 2011, and is aptly named given the fact their current facility is located at the intersection of Mira Mesa Boulevard and Flanders Drive. Since then, the brew has been maturing in oak barrels that formerly housed both Heaven Hill Bourbon and Green Flash’s GABF silver-winning Silva Stout. With a nose that’s packed with cherry and apple aromas, and a balanced, fruit-forward acidity that’s in no way vinegary, one would never guess this is brewmaster Chuck Silva’s first foray into tart territory. It’s an exceptional brew.

There’s exactly one opportunity to get this special sour—at a 10th anniversary release event at Green Flash’s tasting room on Monday, November 5 from 6 to 9 p.m. To celebrate a decade that’s seen them rise to become one of the largest brewing companies in San Diego, the Green Flash crew will be pouring tastings of Flanders Drive, which will be served with a pork belly pairing developed by Carnitas’ Snack Shack, as well as tasters of other rare standout specialties like Silva Stout, Little freak and Barrel-Aged Barleywine. All attendees get two wax-dipped bottles of Flanders Drive and a commemorative glass. Tickets are available online.
