Fun Photo: 200 Surfboards at "Survivor Beach"

Sunday's fundraiser was an eye opener

Published:

More than 200 surfboards were lined up on Sunday, stretching 1,674 feet along La Jolla Shores. Hundreds of peeps brought their boards to this free event, known as Survivor Beach, which raised awareness for cancer and spotlighted survivors.

Survivor Beach wasn’t just visually inspiring. Attendees listened to live music from Christopher Dale and watched dancers from Heali’i's Polynesian Revue. Cancer survivor Clay Treska spoke about going from fighting terminal cancer in a hospice to participating in an Ironman event in Hawaii.

Sunday’s event aimed to build buzz for the 18th Annual Luau and Longboard Invitational (August 21), which has raised $5 million for cancer research so far. This year, proceeds will benefit research at the UCSD Moores Cancer Center.
