5 Ways to Celebrate International Women’s Day in San Diego

Improv comedy, craft beer, and strikes — these local events support equality on March 8

By Sanna Boman Coates

March 8 is International Women’s Day, a day when women across the globe are acknowledged for their social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. Whether you use the day to protest or to celebrate, there’s something going on for everyone who wants to support women’s rights and equality in San Diego this Wednesday.

A Day Without A Woman

This nationwide strike is being organized locally by the group behind the San Diego Women’s March. The idea is to not engage in paid or unpaid work and to avoid spending money for one day to demonstrate what an important part women play in the American workforce.

IRC International Women’s Day Celebration

The International Rescue Committee — a global aid group that provides support for refugees — is organizing a free community event featuring poems and stories from refugee women and girls, a population whose voices might normally not be heard.

Nasty Women Revolution

The Old Town Improv Company is putting on a special Women’s Day performance of its monthly Revolution! show — which celebrates diversity and inclusivity — featuring an all-woman cast. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest.

Chingonas Drink Craft

South Bay’s Machete Beer House will be celebrating “HERstory month” by hosting its third annual fundraising event. There will be a special event t-shirt for sale, and proceeds benefit Latina organization MANA.

Women & Poverty

In the spirit of finding solutions to gender inequality, USD’s Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice is hosting an interactive panel discussion focused on local and global economic challenges for women. This event is free and open to the public.
