Here's some love for our photographers—and our favorite photos from 2015

By Laurie Nicoud

1. This chocolate cup dessert from Kettner Exchange was our February Sweet Spot spotlight and we couldn’t stop talking about it in the office—that’s how you know it’s a good photo!

2. This photo of the U.S. Kiteboard Nationals on San Diego Bay was featured in our Reasons to Love San Diego article in February. We love this photo because of the warm sunshine, the military ship in the background, and the colorful sails.

3. Up for a hike, anyone? We loved the lush greenery and sunlight coming through the trees in this picturesque hike shot of Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. This image won the spot of our subscriber cover for our popular Top 50 Trails feature in April.

4. Our mouths are still watering over this sandwich shot from our June Best Restaurants feature. We didn’t think we were overdoing it by stacking this spicy lobster grilled cheese sandwich from Supernatural Sandwiches four high.

5. This is our favorite styled fashion photo from the September Fall Fashion feature. We loved the black tie fashion, the downtown skyline view from the Central Library, and the fun hair flip by our model.

6. Robert Benson wowed us with this photo for several reasons. Most of us had never seen this spot and we couldn’t figure out how the photographer got all his camera equipment inside the cave. The Sunset Cliffs cave appeared in our September Secret San Diego feature.

7. This nighttime shot of Rob Quigley’s East Village home was immediately a favorite in the office and we knew it would make a great cover option. We loved the glowing light, the wowie zowie architecture with people on each floor, and seeing Quigley’s Central Library design to the side. Subscribers were lucky enough to get this shot as our December Design issue cover.

8. This Best of San Diego image is one of our top summer favorites. We loved the glow of marquee letters against the sand of one of our favorite Coronado beaches. We had these letters in our possession for a week and photographed them stacked in a few spots around San Diego. This shot was actually our test shot, but we loved it so much that we used on our best-selling August cover.

9. Mexican food lovers dream of a salsa bar made up of all the best options around San Diego. We made that dream come true in this styled photo for our Mexican Food feature in November. The props from this photo shot in our downtown office was almost too pretty to eat, but don’t worry—our office had no trouble devouring it after the shot was snapped.

10. We love an al fresco dining shot, especially this one from Catania in La Jolla. Paul Body was the first photographer to shoot this restaurant before it opened, and he waited around for this picture perfect sunset. After seeing this image the entire office wanted to go. Have you been yet?
