There was a time when San Diego really did think big. San Diego History Center executive director Charlotte Cagan’s account of the Panama–California Exposition held in 1915 is riveting and really shows the scale of the event. President Wilson pushed a button in Washington to set off the lights. Torpedo destroyers and other ships aimed and shot cannons. There were orchestras and roller coasters and big plans for the future. If you read these pages regularly, you probably know I’m a fan of Balboa Park. I went there as a kid, now I take my own kids all the time, I got married there, yadda, yadda, yadda. But it’s true. And it saddens me to see all the deferred maintenance and the lack of a big celebration in honor of the centennial. But, in the spirit of those who pulled off that exposition, I’m going to think optimisically about this year for Balboa Park.

So big, big, BIG is the theme of this issue, with one of my favorite stories of the year, “Big Ideas.” We made a list of the most interesting and innovative people we could find, some familiar rock stars and plenty of new voices, and asked them to give us one big, bold idea for San Diego. Some of them ended up being applicable way beyond our borders, but that’s just all the better. I said the sky’s the limit, but then one scientist started talking about life on Mars, so there you go. You’ll find ideas on manufacturing and makers, food and online voting, even a superfood called breadfruit.

And if anything is BIG in San Diego these days, it’s juice. No, not the orange stuff that I still drink in the morning—the cold-pressed juice packed with kale and chia seeds and all kinds of healthy goodies.

I was skeptical about drinking my veggies, but executive editor Erin Meanley Glenny inspired me. She compiled tidbits and tips, recipes and factoids that really make the whole juice movement feel like just that—a movement. And one that is definitely centered in San Diego. And it doesn’t have to taste icky, really. We know our readers love health and fitness, so I’m betting you guys are going to devour this one. Cheers to a happy 2015.
