In this issue, Eric explores the world of California Congressman Darrell Issa.

What surprised you about Mr. Issa? I had no idea he could code! He said he knows FORTRAN and COBOL.

Which part of his policies do you find interesting? He is so interested in open government. Some of his issues are divisively partisan, but the open government stuff gets support from all sides.

What do you miss about living in San Diego? Strawberries in February! Nothing beats fresh,local strawberries in the middle of the winter.  

New Year’s resolution? Improve my data programming skills.

How do you make your book selections each month? I talk to friends in the book business, scour industry websites and blogs, and read some advanced copies.

Favorite book of all time? The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton.

Is it true you host a “magazine club”? A group of ridiculously smart women I’m lucky to know meet once a month to talk about a curated mix of articles. We focus a lot on race, gender, class, politics, and parenting.

Was it weird having us inside your home taking photos and asking questions? Yes! How could it not be weird? My partner and I prefer to be behind the camera. But it’s fun to share the house’s story with others.

FITNESS EXPERT

In this issue, Hilary test-drove a workout called boxing fusion.

On a scale of one to 10 (10 being the hardest), how intense was boxing fusion? An eight, at its most intense.

Anything surprise you about the experience? It’s more “fusion” than boxing. The class is more about high-intensity, short-duration functional fitness than it is about putting on gloves and punching things.

What other fitness trends have you tried recently? I’ve been more about trying new experiences. I’d rather go for a hike or check out a new surf spot than try to do yoga on a paddleboard.

New Year’s resolution? To keep challenging myself, and, more importantly, to keep believing in myself.
