6 Reasons to Hit the San Diego County Fair This Week

You have until July 4 to sample the new additions of unicorn foods and a not-so-secret speakeasy

Published:

San Diego County Fair

The June gloom is burning off, the days are luxuriously long, and you still have time for this classic summer outing. Some things at the San Diego County Fair never get old (like fried foods and bumper cars) while others (like candy-infused cocktails at the speakeasy) are wonderfully new. Enjoy all of them while there's still time.

Did Someone Say Unicorn Foods?

Look out for unicorn foods, those finger foods made with electric shades of pink, yellow, and blue, served by a handful of food vendors on the grounds. If your adventurous tastes still aren’t satisfied, tuck into a Hot Cheetos or ramen burrito. Or consider seeking out some healthy eats, like fruit salad and nuts, also on hand. With the Kids Deal Meal, little ones can feast on an entrée, side, and drink for $5.99. Oh yeah, and there’s a secret speakeasy somewhere on the fairgrounds—happy hunting!

Watermelon Seed-Spitting Contest (and Other Competitions)

Pucker up for the daily watermelon seed-spitting contest, held every day at 12:30, plus other fun competitions like the “Bean Boozled” jelly bean tasting, corn husking, horseshoe, and floral design contest.

Bumper Cars (and Other Classic Rides)

Family-friendly rides abound, but even adults can get their jollies by enjoying a few fender benders in a bumper car.

Comedians, Magicians, and Other Performers

What could be more magical than a day at the fair? How about taking in a magic show? Or for that matter, any of a laundry list of entertainment from MMA to improv to quad races.

Cars, Flowers, and Livestock

Rabbits, goats, pigeons, calves, oh my! Drop by the livestock areas, butterfly flight house, horse pens, and more animal exhibitions to commune with nature and snap a few ‘grammable shots of the tykes.

The Concert Series

The super-extensive concerts series plays host to more than 1,800 acts performing rock, oldies, Latin music, and more. Go big and order a gourmet dinner package with tableside dining.
