I grew up… in Cary, North Carolina. It was a great place to grow up, similar to here with the beach and mountains nearby. I certainly enjoy the no-humidity thing we have going on in San Diego.

I’ve worked with San Diego Magazine… Starting this year on several projects including the September issue cover, “Secret San Diego.” It was a fun one, subject-matter wise. We were covering all the hidden/secret areas in San Diego. A few required some off-roading to get to, we were in a boat for one, and hiking all around for most of the others. This was my first cover so I was super excited and thankful when I got the email asking if I was interested. I quickly agreed and checked the weather for good days to shoot (this presented a few issues with the summer marine layer). Thankfully it cleared up on the days we scheduled and we had some nice light. Seeing the magazine cover in person at my local grocery store was awesome! I ran over to it like a kid and bought a few copies. (Laurie’s Note: See the full feature and photos Corey shot here)

I’m currently working on… a dark and dramatic football series using the Chargers stadium as a background. This is the type of photography I love doing—it really gets my creative engine pumping. I grew up under stadium lights playing just about every sport there is so this definitely contributes to my photography style and what interests me visually.

My favorite thing to shoot in San Diego is… everything. Its such a great place to shoot! haha If I had to pick one thing I would have to say Crossfit. I’ve met some great people and created an award-winning series. One of my favorite shoots.

The San Diego Magazine project I’m most proud of is… a quick shot I did of the new Waterfront Park downtown. The angles I found on the ground were not really showing how cool the park was. After reviewing I snuck into a hotel and went to the top floor and got a really nice overview of the park. For me it was a sense of accomplishment by searching and eventually finding the right solution to creating a good photo when your first idea doesn’t work. (Laurie’s Note: We featured it in our Best of San Diego feature as our Best New Landmark, read why here)

I’m inspired by… a lot of things but I think music inspires me most. I love listening to music while I work. I usually select music that seems fitting to the photos I’m currently retouching or planning. I find this adds to the creative process and also makes time fly by.

If I wasn’t taking photos for a living… I think being a firemen or some type of job where I could give back to the world everyday would be awesome. Playing golf on the PGA tour would be pretty nice too.
