Secrets Behind the Shoot with John Malashock
How our back page came together

For the back page of our March issue, we met up with artistic director John Malashock for an early morning photoshoot in North Park before his 10 a.m. meeting at Birch Theatre. After a quick outfit change—courtesy of Laurie Nicoud's $1,000 shopping trip the night before—and a little hair and makeup love by Audra Rene, we were ready to shoot. Jenny and Becca of Found Creative Studio arrived early and scouted the surrounding areas of the theater building for our background options. We decided on the orange exterior wall color of the Birch Theatre building and the front theater sign. After 30 different poses and facial expressions, we knew we had lots to work with and it was a wrap! John even had time to walk into Starbucks for a coffee before his meeting.
Fast forward to the next day we were back in the office reviewing our final options with the edit team. It was a toughie! Senior Editor Erin Meanley was immediately in love without the dramatic sky and front theater sign, while editor Erin Chambers Smith preferred the orange color and pop of blue in his shirt. See the winning image and read his q&a on the last page of the March issue (page 192) .
