Surfers convened at Bird’s Surf Shed this past Friday for the sold-out opening night of the inaugural San Diego Surf Film festival. That’s right—inaugural.
It’s surprising San Diego hasn’t hosted a surf film festival before, for a few reasons. For one, our reefs and beachbreaks have produced icons like Mike Hynson and Skip Frye. And many surfers here are part of a tight-knot community. Take the Windansea Surf Club, which is nearing its 50th anniversary. So it’s no surprise surfers welcomed...

Last night, I went to the grand reopening of the Lafayette Hotel & Swim Club in North Park. It’s a neat little spot that looks like a giant Colonial manse from the front, and then surprises you with rooms that are each very unique and whimsically-decorated. We took a tour of the guest rooms and bungalows, which have been redone and updated with flat screen TVs and iPod speakers. One three-bedroom suite was itself an adorable little house and the price was...

Big, big things are happening at the San Diego International Airport, including the Green Build (expansion of terminal 2), to be completed in 2013. This week, I had the pleasure of hearing all about the developments from Paul Manasjan the Environmental Affairs director; Constance White, the Art Program Manager; and Cheryl Brown, the Deputy Director of Marketing. Alongside other graphic designers we got the dish on the changes plus we toured the new discovery center. Here are 9 reasons to get excited about the future SAN.

Here's a cool campaign we can get behind: Sports stars including San Diego’s own Shaun Phillips, as well as Tim Lincecum, Ray Rice and Hopo Solo, are asking their fans an important question: “How can we give back to our community?”
Now through April 30th, fans in San Diego can submit local charities and causes for Shaun Phillips to support. Popchips is accepting charity and local cause submissions on both their

Part-time Del Mar resident and ex-Charger Drew Brees spoke with Stephanie Turner (daughter of Norv).
Stephanie Turner: So on December 26, 2011 you broke Dan Marino’s single season passing record and how much was the record on your mind during those last few games of the season?
Drew Brees: I mean it was on my mind a little bit just cause it’s a significant record, and I knew how important it was, especially on that Monday night against the Falcons because I knew that everyone...

Some people just looooove to run. Former Bachelor and Navy doc Dr. Andy Baldwin is one of them, and in our April 2012 issue, he tells us why we should run a marathon. Easy enough said—he has completed 35 marathons, 5 ultra marathons, and 8 Ironman Triathlons.
Well, not that I want to give him 100% credit, but today I signed up for the Rock 'n' Roll Half-Marathon on June...

On Monday, April 23, come support one of our favorite Little Italy hotspots at Bimbi de Bencotto. The restaurant will donate 100 percent of sales to the Department of Oncology at Rady Children's Hospital.
The cause is close to the eatery's heart. Valentina Di Pietro, co-owner and P.R. manager, put together this special night in thanks to the hospital, which has treated her son Vittorio.

Well, well, well, another day, another issue. We are working feverishly to wrap up the May issue. We're sending it to the printer today. And by "today," I mean "midnight."
What happens on the last day? Here's what I do:
» Write and rewrite a few neglected nuggets
» "Zhuszh" headlines, captions, and copy
» Write the TOC (table of contents) and some FOB items (front-of-book)
» Stare at photos and...

Have you heard? Will Ferrell has announced a sequel to Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy, the comedy that was set in 1970s San Diego. There is no word yet whether his costars will rejoin him, or whether it will once again take place in America's Finest City.
This movie has a real cult following...which I don't completely understand. I like Will Ferrell (who, like me, went to USC!), but I prefer some of his...

Carlos Kotkin will be reading at Bay Books on Coronado Island tomorrow, March 24th. This should be a real treat—I mean, this guy is hysterical. The San Diego native has performed at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater and is a regular in the Comedy Central Stage show Sit ’N Spin. His new book, Please God Let It Be Herpes: A Heartfelt Quest for Love and Companionship, is out now. We checked in with the funnyman to learn more.
